Pattern ABLON

Enlighten me, someone, please: for what is it used?

It's for cutting film leaders to shape for screw-mount cameras (IIRC).

The part looks like a glorified hinge, but I assume there is more to it than that.

Not really!!

I freehand cut the film leader, longer is OK, a vague cut down the middle is OK but don't cut through a perforation. I start at the perforation end and aim for the existing short leader always snipping a little of it off, never leaving a step.

I knew someone who would quite merrily load a short leader without any problems, he started photography when the leaders where long and I suppose never thought about it, ignorance can be bliss.

I freehand cut the film leader

Same here, never been an problem. You can load film with a short leader if you slip a card into the camera first to cover the gate/sprockets, load film (over the card) then slip the card out. That said I find it just as easy to cut the leader.

Hi Martha,

Please read these links :

Cutting Leica Leader and Leica film loading

use to load film on old Leica like IIIf

Henry

Thanks, Doc. Very interesting that the earlier models load differently. (I have no experience with any Leica earlier that an M3 and clearly had no idea what the ABLON does. It is a rather ingenious tool, IMHO.)

Well that price is Kevin for you. Sometimes he goes a bit crazy on the prices. His stuff is good though.

I got mine because someone had misspelled it albon. It's worth saving a search for the variations...

The ABLON has many uses and leader trimming is the least important.

The MAIN reason I got mine is because I use the Leica brass film cassettes. These are best loaded in total darkness to eliminate exposing the trailing end like happens with tape and daylight loaders. Only the ABLON has a pointed end and has posts to engage the sprocket holes positioning the film so an arrow point can be properly cut to enter the slit in the take up reel. If the point is not centered, film can go in crooked. If the cuts do not end at the middle of a sprocket hole, the tail may be hard to pull through the when emptying it. If it gets stuck, it is very difficult to open the aging screws to release the film.

So the arrow point is the valuable one. A leader can be cut with the scissors built into your Swiss Army knife.

Tha ABLON Japanese clones do not have the poined end, only the leader trim guide. Worthless tool.

That`s what makes it valuable to me. There is no other way to make the accurate cuts required on the attachment end. You can cut and pray and it works sometimes, but sometimes you get in serious trouble. Sometimes you just need the right tool and bite the bullit.
