corrado&rina Posted May 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) We have a D-Lux 4, and we are extremely pleased. We have one difficulty when we shoot HD videos: the video on the camera LCD looks perfect, when we download it onto the computer, it does not reproduce properly. It "stutters", and the audio is not synchronised. We do not have any problem with the WVGA and VGA video format. Is anyone experiencing the same? Have you found a solution? Thanks in advance. strikkflypilot Posted May 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 19, 2009 What computer, Processor, Ram, Graphics adapter?
mjh Posted May 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted May 19, 2009 It is usually an issue with the computer used for playback. Not all PCs are up to the task.
corrado&rina Posted May 20, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted May 20, 2009 The specs are: CPU: AMD Turion MT34 Ram: 1Gb, PC333 Graphic card: ATI Mobility Radeon X700 Disk: 100 Gb UDMA We play very easily HD videos from other sources. Thanks in advance. Corrado & Rina
Nicoleica Posted May 20, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 20, 2009 At the risk of asking a stupid question, are you playing the video back from a file actually loaded onto the computer, or are you playing from either the SD card, or the camera connected via USB? corrado&rina Posted May 20, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted May 20, 2009 We have tried all the three options: 1) playing on the computer from the camera using the cable 2) inserting the card into the card reader and playing from the card 3) copying the file onto the hard disk and playing from the file The card is a 16Gb Dane Elec. The same happens when using a 4Gb Dane Elec. Same results every time. Best, Corrado & Rina
Nicoleica Posted May 20, 2009 Share #7 Posted May 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, It may be related to the speed of the card. There is a note in the DL4 manual about problems with slow cards for HD video. Have you tried it with a 'fast' card? (I'm not sure how fast Dane Elec cards are.) Good luck. corrado&rina Posted May 20, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted May 20, 2009 Does the speed of the card have an influence even after we have downloaded the video onto the hard disk? It seems a bit strange. Best P.S.: What card speed are you using for videos? Corrado & Rina
Nicoleica Posted May 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 20, 2009 The speed of the card may affect the quality of the recording, and therefore any subsequent downloads etc. won't improve anything. I use cards with a minimum of 133x speed. These tend to give me good results. One further thought, how do your videos look when played on a television? If these look OK, then try again on the computer with no other programs running. If your computer is a bit low on available memory, or is otherwise busy, this will also degrade playback. I hope this may help.
kully Posted May 20, 2009 Share #10 Posted May 20, 2009 Google 'vlc player' - it is free, download it and try playing the files with that application. I tried to play a HD film from my camera on a 2003 era 1.8 Ghz Athlon and all was good - the software can be the problem. Good luck, and please do tell if it worked (or not). mattwardle Posted May 21, 2009 Share #11 Posted May 21, 2009 Its your PC. HD is pretty demanding on processors and will chew up ram. Im running a Macbook Pro so dont have any issues. I would also look around for some decent software if you want to 'play' with HD properly. Try also downloading quicktime. You can upgrade it to QT pro and that llows simple edits. YOur PC may run better while using it as its less processor hungry. Matt
chkphoto Posted May 21, 2009 Share #12 Posted May 21, 2009 There is another issue with the Dlux 4 HD video. It uses an animation codec and when panning there will be a stutter effect as the camera is moved. Audio can get out of sync when the audio is built into the video/graphics card and is not a separate card.
corrado&rina Posted May 21, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted May 21, 2009 Can you please explain the animation codec issue? Why should it be a problem? Where can we find more information? What do you mean by panning in this context? Sorry for the row of questions .... Best, Corrado & Rina
chkphoto Posted May 21, 2009 Share #14 Posted May 21, 2009 Sorry, sorry, sorry. It is Quicktime JPEG compression that the Dlux4 uses (we can't figure if it's A or I am a director/CD for a media group and the animators were testing some footage from my Dlux4. When they brought it into AfterFX, they were getting a stutter which was seen during a pan (meaning the movement didn't look smooth) We were trying to use it as a video layer married into graphics, stills and true uncompressed 1080p footage. We were spitting out the final in Quicktime animation compression and the stutter was even more pronounced. There's nothing you can really do about it as it is the nature of JPEG compression (or most any video compression). You will see it when you pan the camera across strong subject verticles and you then use that footage in an editing program. It's not noticeable in a locked camera shot. For everyday use it's fine. Sorry if this went a little off the original of processor/video card issues
corrado&rina Posted May 22, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted May 22, 2009 Thanks to everybody for their help! The problem has been solved by installing last version of VLC + starting a de-cluttered desktop. Everything works fine, including audio. I have to say we are stunned by the results: such a little camera, such good videos (the only problems is behind the camera + some automatic changes of exposure when you suddenly move the camera to high shadows or high lights when shooting). Thanks! Corrado & Rina P.S.: We forgot to say we are using Linux as well, and this set up works great on it ....
