Hello,

Well, I was going to spend the morning going through the "banding" threads but then I thought, maybe there is something outside I could shoot!

 

So, up at 6:11 am and out the door. The M8 makes you do funny things, like lose sleep.

 

Here are my first attempts:

 

Leica M8 in Central Park

 

I should post the full size shots somewhere, they're much more impressive than the scaled down versions.

 

I'm happy with the colors straight out of the camera, I really didn't do much to these photos except sharpen them a little bit. These were all taken with the 35mm 1.4 ASPH, or maybe the 50mm 14 ASPH in a couple.

 

My wife is amazed by the initial results and that makes me happy. :)

Looks very, very nice indeed, such vivid colors. Very promising.

What camera did you use to shoot e.g. your Riviera pictures at Eze and Nice, some Canon model ?

Hello Steen,

All of the other shots were made with the R-D1, another camera I love. Maybe I shouldn't have sold it. :confused:

Interesting to note too that the last thing you looked at out of the box when you got it was the manual. Not what the Lieca engineers would have you do of course! Does this suggest that the M8 is somehow intuitive in its design?:)

Ha, ha, I spared you the pain of seeing the other one hundred mediocre shots! :) That's what I love about digital, the pain of failure is not as acute as it is with film.

 

As for the manual, I printed it out a couple of weeks ago and have been reading it ever since! The only strange thing I missed is that you have to move a little catch on the battery charger to get the plug out. I figured it out after a while...

 

I think the camera is fairly intuitive. I like the fact that there are no nested menus. That keeps you losing menu options in a bunch of nested submenus. The shortcut menu for the most useful options is a great idea.

Nice images. It's nice to see someone is actually out taking real pictures with the M8 rather than taking "banding" test shots.

Yeah, I'm trying not to get too upset about these banding issues. So far, I have been having fun with the camera and getting used to it. It is different than the R-D1...

Did you use default settings? The M8 and DMR seem to give more film (kodacolor? agfachrome? :-)

much as the difference between cine and video. Most digital cameras default to TRY to look like real life rather than like a photo.

 

To my taste, a photo IS different from reality - it stops time, it allows different perspective,and allows eye to see color in a richer way.

 

I must say I do NOT find the images oversaturated from that point of view.

 

(However, I did grew uip thinking war had no color since all WWII movie and news was B&W !)

The banding thread are a bit annoying. Itis an understandableissue of a sensitive sensor. It may be thelack of AA filter, slanted microlenses and lower noise and increased sensitivity all make a simple 'overflow' pheomenon non something that Leica must 'fix'

 

Guys, it is what it is.

 

And the highlights are not just overblown they are likely overblown by many orders of magnitute, The charge has togo somewhere (note most examples are not street light butdue to taking an area exposed image with super bright spots

if slightly uderexposed by one two stops, likely notvisible

Thorsten, I guess you are not a mac guy;)

Mac afficionados make hundreds of shots during the unwrapping of Macs, ipods, even socks with the face of Steve J. printed on it:D

 

BTW: A black M8 and a black 80GB ipod - this is the top of the notch - but too dangerous in Central Park?
