stuny Posted May 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Beginning in 1935 most cars raced at the Indianapolis 500 used 4 cylinder Offenhauser engine blocks (they were in wining cars for 27 years between 1935 and 1976, and dominant prior to the 1960s), and the cars had engines only in the front. That began to change in '61 with the entry of a lone mid engine car. Soon the Offenhauser was all but dead, though in 1976 an "Offy" powered car one for a final time. Here's what an Offy engineblock looks like, as on display in the window of Macys' flagshiop store at herald Square, Manhattan.

pauledell Posted May 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 16, 2009 Stuart, Do you think that picture might not bring back memories to the oldest "oldtime" race fans? I can remember when I was a youth, listening to the Indy 500 on radio. The Offies had quite a sound as they went by. (I won't admit to being that old). Great picture. stuny Posted May 16, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted May 16, 2009 Paul - Thank you. Clearly you must have heard recording played back many years later. Jockele - Thank you.
elansprint72 Posted May 16, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2009 Yeah Stuart but those American Offenhausers are pretty puny 4.1 litre things. Here is a real English engine, 22 litres, 12 cylinders; most of the cars over here have motors like this.
soleforeal Posted May 16, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 16, 2009 It's nice to know that Macy's know what they have there. I have heard of people replacing straight six engines for the four bangers because there was more options for modifications and maybe the torque and rpm range.
