One thing Leica could do, probably with software, is "inadvertantly" find that they've made the S2 fully compatible with the Nikon flash system. I don't doubt that it can be done, and without violating any patents or copyrights...as long as Nikon uses a standard strobe connections. And I'm not talking compatible in some modes, I'm talking completely 100% Nikon compatible. It'd be one huge question about the S2 done away with in the most elegant possible way...

I just read this post in photo.net's Leica Digital forum:

António Ferreira , May 05, 2009; 07:06 p.m.

I've been at Leica factory today. First fifty S2 have been shipped to Solms. I was told they will be cheaper than Hasselblads.

I have no comment on the accuracy of this. I posted his name and the full post here. Also, here is the link to the page:

all that tells me is that the low-medium tech opto-mechanical company leica has serious problems going hi-tech after years of denial that the future of photography is digital. it is all patch work until now. hasselblad, leaf and phase have years of experience in the digital mdium format area, will be very hard to beat.

Since Phase One is doing the digital work for Leica on the S2 what does that tell you? Leica does the mechanical / optical portion with a Kodak sensor, and Phase One designing the electronics, image processing, and software....your problem with that approach is...?

Phase Leica's Las Vegas marriage has broken up months ago, my friend ... you should spend more time on the forum. :)

Buckhorn, not according to: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/899795-post328.html

Personally, I have no idea what the current relationship between PhaseOne and Leica is - but PhaseOne is a direct competitor to the S2 in the form of their 40+ camera, so as with Imacon, they may be parting ways.

--------------------------------

Sdai: "Las Vegas marriage" may not be the best term for the Leica-PhaseOne relationship. The PMA show in March was held in Las Vegas, but that is not where or when the cooperation agreement was announced. It was a "Cologne/Köln" marriage, if anything.

OTOH, Britney Spears may indeed marry an S2 in Las Vegas... 8^)

Andy,

Thank you for linking to my post on another S2 thread. I'll go a step further to clarify:

Phase One has had no involvement at all in developing the S2, not hardware, not firmware, not image processing. The S2 was designed 100% by Leica in-house in Solms.

Where this leaves S2 support in Capture One is still up in the air. This will really depend on how much value Phase places on the lucrative software licensing arrangement with Leica that they have enjoyed since 2006 versus the direct competition they face on the hardware side from the S2.

Just a syntax question... is that "to Solms" to be interpreted like S2s are made "somewhere" and then shipped to the Leica factory just for packaging or so ? Not that I'm interested into... but is a curios phrase...

From Leica Portugal factory to Germany?

This would make sense.

The factory in Germany handles all the optics grinding, polishing, and coating. Lenses are assembled and tested, as are cameras and binoculars. The cast magnesium and milled aluminum and brass pieces are not made in the same facility as there is a risk of grease and metal particles getting into the air. In fact, the employee cafeteria has no kitchen for the fear of grease smoke getting into the ventilation system. Every day, meals are brought in from an outside catering company.

The facility in Portugal does much of the machine and metal casting work for cameras. Lens barrel assemblies are made in Wetzlar by Uwe Weller Feinwerktechnik GmbH, which is owned by Kaufmann's ACM and is located in Leitz Park.

So, if the S2 chassis is already being shipped from Portugal to Solms, this is a good thing. It means that S2 production is on track and the body has gone from hand-made prototype to a full production unit. Of course, I don't have any confirmation on whether this is true or not.

I spoke to the Leica rep at the event yesterday where I got to play with the new M lenses. He confirmed that Leica were still on target to have the S2 available for sale by late summer.

@David

I also heard the stories about the problems with particles and smoke, that's why they get two seperate building at the Leitz-Park?

As far as I know, the machined parts are not made by Leica but mostly Clößner and, as mentioned, Weller.. I know the zinc-die-cast-processes were handled by Leica in Portugal, but what about the Magnesium-elements mostly found in the S2? Aren't these made by suppliers? What about the main circuit board of the S2, do they finally invest into placement machines for the Leitz-Park?

I'm not surprised to hear about all of the subcontracting. I once read somewhere that the bodyshell for the R6/6.2 was still being made by Minolta for Leica. Everything else in the camera came from Portugal and Germany. Not sure if this is entirely true, but it sounds plausible. Sort of.

Actually I do not really care where the parts of the S2 are made, they obviously were all designed by Leica (or at least chosen and certified), so they together make a ull Leica.

And this is what finally counts!

As already often mentioned, the technical and build quality is not my concern, this will be perfect I am 100% sure.

My concerns are rather SW, FW and good professional support.

It's not subcontracting, it's being made in a Leica factory in Portugal. Just like the M8, MP, M7...

the point of my post was not to debate the what's and wherefor's of leica's assembly. The point was to say that they have shipped some camera bodies to solms, and in my mind, this is a very good thing. Debating every single angle and word seems to be a virus in here. :o
