ShivaYash Posted April 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all, This has happened three times now, and my M8 is only 1 week old! If I shot a series of frames whilst on 'C' mode, and then take some more photos... the shutter jams. The LCD states: 'attention - shutter fault' Its as if the shutter doesn't cock again. Slightly worrying...! I then have the turn the camera off, and then it corrects its self. Ideas?
Advertisement Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Hi ShivaYash, Take a look here M8 shutter fault.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ShivaYash Posted April 30, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted April 30, 2009 I forgot to mention... when this does happen, the noise the camera makes is similar to an electronic camera rewinding a film. Clearly the motor is running but not connecting to the shutter?
epand56 Posted April 30, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 30, 2009 I've never used the "C" mode, but should I have a 1 week old camera that behave like yours i would give it back to my dealer and would ask for it to be replaced. Without loosing a second.
digger1914 Posted April 30, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 30, 2009 I am not a C user myself, but do you have discrete mode on? I seem to recall pproblems with using discrete mode and C at the same time.
j_lir Posted April 30, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 30, 2009 you must set the shutter mode to non discreet, and then you can use "C" to your hearts content. this has been this way since the new m8.2 was released, it took me some time to figure it out, and i'm not the only one. cheers
pascal_meheut Posted May 1, 2009 Share #6 Posted May 1, 2009 Same for me with 2 M8, one with the old shutter, another with the updated, less noisy shutter. As some said, use "Discrete" in S mode only and it solves the problem. Slightly annoying maybe but no big deal.
ShivaYash Posted May 1, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted May 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I knew someone would have the answer! Yes Discreet mode is on...! Thanks.
marknorton Posted May 1, 2009 Share #8 Posted May 1, 2009 I expect it's on their list of bugs to fix in the next firmware release; if the camera works properly in either single/discreet or continuous/"indiscreet", it's probably fine.
RaymondH Posted May 1, 2009 Share #9 Posted May 1, 2009 I don't know why Leica doesn't disable discreet mode in Continuous mode... it really doesn't make sense there, except for the last picture - but that would be after a whole bunch of noise from the previous pictures. It should be a single shot mode feature only. Ya'd think it shouldn't be hard for Leica to update this in the firmware.

They actually do disable it, IE it does not function the same as when in S mode. But there is a glitch in the firmware or electronic of the camera and the camera get confused with C mode and discrete mode. I've use the discete mode maybe 3 times and always turn it off when I don't need it. I actually find it annoying. And as I only have M8c's the sound is not that different from the normal. hetoog Posted October 1, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 1, 2009 I have the same problem with my m8. Of course i have put discrete mode on but accidently the switch turns to continu which i normally never use and then the camera goes wild. I returned it to my dealer with the idea that there is a real problem with the shutter. Now i read these above contributions i understand that even in Solms they wont be able to fix it. Do we have to wait on the next firmware update or could it be a problem on a few m8's
hetoog Posted October 1, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 1, 2009 I phoned with leica in Solms and they say that it in continu mode you should not use the silent feature, first switch it of in your settings and then you can switch from single to continous. Kind of a problem when you like silent mode and accidently switch to C The problem is caused by the upgrade in software with the feature silent but I think the overlooked this problem. They can't do anything about it. It is not impossible that there is coming a firmware upgrade but the Leica emlopye i spoke said he does not know the are working on that right now. so we have to wait what Solms is comming up with. scott kirkpatrick Posted October 2, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 2, 2009 I view switching off Discreet if you need C (for low shutter speed, or for faster response on a few shots) as a work-around. I think there are perfectly legitimate reasons to use C, even when Discreet-S is your default configuration. I can understand Leica fixing it for the M9 first, and I hope that such a fix, which is still needed, will also fix the problem in the M8. But because the M9 has two dsps and a faster internal clock speed, plus what is claimed to be "new ground-up" firmware, the cause of the lockups in the M8 may be conceptually the same but require fresh microcode. Which costs money and time, so I am not holding my breath on this one. scott
m8-hugger Posted October 24, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 24, 2009 I have been hammering my M8 professionally for over 2 years and I had the same "shutter fault" error message come up last week for the first time, and the camera refused to work. I returned it to Leica Solms for repair. They said usually turning off the power will remedy the fault. (It didnt on my M8 no matter how many times I turned it off, of course thats the first thing I tried, and took out the battery. According to Leica service in Solms, the "Shutter fault" error is a bug in the firmware (there was nothing physically wrong with my shutter apparently), that they say will be remedied with the new firmware upgrade.. which isnt out yet and they cant say when it will be. Until then the only way of getting my M8 working again, was to pay 700 euros for a shutter upgrade. Hmm. Not ideal, but they got me over a barrel here. Apparently re-uploading the current firmware may remedy the problem too. It's a bug. Its not perfect, but after 2 years pro shooting with the M8 I still love it. Shootist Posted October 24, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 24, 2009 Please explain the your bolded comment. If this is a bug in the firmware (defective goods/software) and not a physical shutter problem why do you need to pay to correct this problem that has been with the camera from the start. This is totally ridiculous and IMHO very underhanded. yanidel Posted October 24, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 24, 2009 I have obviously the same issue when in C mode but also when it is cold ... strange but whenever temperature drops to 5 celsius or below ... I get the constant recocking thing. After it warms up at home, the issues goes. Don't tell me this is a firmware issue ...
Nicoleica Posted October 25, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 25, 2009 I have obviously the same issue when in C mode but also when it is cold ... strange but whenever temperature drops to 5 celsius or below ... I get the constant recocking thing. After it warms up at home, the issues goes. Don't tell me this is a firmware issue ... It could be that the low temperature has degraded the battery performance somewhat, and that a slightly delayed response from the mechanical components is causing the firmware 'feature' to interpret this as a timing fault. Also, a low temperature could cause certain components to contract enough to become outside of the permitted tolerance range. (Although the specified operating range is 0 to +40 degrees C.) Just a thought.

Don't tell me this is a firmware issue ... yanidel, The problem comes from a part of the shutter called (in French) "le chariot" (it's the word used by Leica in the repair form). Leica replaced it in one of my cameras (I had the same problems described here... but in "normal" mode). My camera had to go 4 times to Solms... Apparently they missed the repair and when I got the camera back, the problem with recocking the shutter was completely gone but I had other new problems (shutter didn't close completely and camera locks). Finally, they replaced the camera.
yanidel Posted October 27, 2009 Share #20 Posted October 27, 2009 thanks for the advices, I also believe that it is about some element contracting. Since I have various batteries and they all give same result, it is really a body issue. I will probably send it to Solms at some point (December), that is if another body dares show up at my dealer ...
