luigi bertolotti Posted April 27, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Pete, this is OOT... but maybe you can help me about a strange US (or maybe, Canada) racing car of which I have only a vague, but impressive, remembrance (and not any doc). They were the first '70s... maybe even '69... the times in which McLarens used to dominate the CANAM series (some Ferraris partecipated too... I remember 612 and 712... Amon, Andretti, Rodriguez...) : someday, a strange SUPERLITTLE car appeared i the CanAm races... it was INCREDIBLY small... the big V8 made half of the car or so !! The tyres were 10" or 12", I think... the driver had a posture that even resembled a kart, even if there was a "regular" body: I do not remember anything else... apart some pics in old magazines of the time that I haven't anymore... I think it disappeared after 2 or 3 races, but was really an impressive small beast.
stuny Posted April 27, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 27, 2009 Pete - Is it one of the cars used in Bonneville to attack the land speed record?

luigi bertolotti Posted April 27, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 27, 2009 Howmet turbine Let's way for Pete... ... but Howmet could be IT... exhausts are revealing of a "strange" engine... a car and a name I almost had forgotten... btw, seems to me it was "Hownet" but surely can be wrong ("net" wasn't yet so fashionable in those days... )
elansprint72 Posted April 27, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted April 27, 2009 Luigi, I think the car you refer to was the The SHADOW designed (amongst many other things) by Trevor Lee Harris, follow this link and scroll down: Trevor Lee Harris Better photo here: 1968-69 AVS Shadow-Chevrolet Lowline CanAm Racing Sports Initial Prototype - Motorbase Pete, this is OOT... but maybe you can help me about a strange US (or maybe, Canada) racing car of which I have only a vague, but impressive, remembrance (and not any doc). They were the first '70s... maybe even '69... the times in which McLarens used to dominate the CANAM series (some Ferraris partecipated too... elansprint72 Posted April 30, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted April 30, 2009 I can't help thinking that over-sized rear foil would do more harm than good.
steed Posted May 1, 2009 Share #15 Posted May 1, 2009 My good friends: the Cortina tail lamps are conclusive, in my opinion. That is a Howmet turbine. Dr. Dick Thompson, Ed Lowther, ??Roy Heppenstall?? and a couple of other second stringers put in some good drives in it. We need a definitive answer, however. I could be wrong, as usual, but I think the engine was originally for a helicopter, maybe I dreamed that?
steed Posted May 1, 2009 Share #17 Posted May 1, 2009 It was the Howmet!! You are correct-the engine was from a helicopter. And the chassis was a lowly spaceframe McKee with a sexy body on top. I am a compendium of worthless information. Cheers back to you, and thanks for posting. John W

steed Posted May 4, 2009 Share #19 Posted May 4, 2009 Most kind of you, and definitely the minority opinion! My new passtime, by the way, is writing to drivers of the 60's to see if I can get letters back. Three and a half for four so far (one only sent an autograph on a photo I sent). Make the present great by connecting with the heroes of the past. Regards, and thanks for great posts. John W
Guest suilvenman Posted May 7, 2009 Share #20 Posted May 7, 2009 Pete, I was going to suggest a Ford Cortina based on the 3rd photo: that looks like the triple rear light assembly from a Mark 1. Could I ask you to not include any deliberately misleading details in future photo puzzles. Cheers, Ken. (ps very nice photos)
