A single theme is a decidedly poor idea.

It works well when dealing with one photographer but should not be imposed as a condition on a group.

To what end?

Those participating should be able to submit whatever they think is their best work.

Particularly, since this is a venture in which the cost of entry will be fairly high, the contributors should have complete freedom of action.

There should not be any need to operate within an artificially imposed set of constraints as to the contributed work.

Let us not let this excellent idea turn into an exercise in myopic banality.

William i think you make some good points here and am in agreement with you.

Jan i like the idea of a forum book and if the theme was more open then i'd be interested in participating.

Nice idea.

I am a complete beginner, so maybe my opinion doesn't count that much, but I think nobody would wish to buy a book with 200 photographs of bridges, except some bridge fanatic? :)

I agree the book should consist of the best works from participating photographers. That is what I would like to see.

I think this a great idea. Good Leica publicity and a chance to include lots of different styles. Count me in too. Just want to be sure I do not give away the copyright to the pictures included. "For book use only. No other rights transfurred."

I'll like to join. Just two different types of Leicas : R + M but so many different styles, expressions and views. This would be a great book not only for Leica afficionadeos :-)

I think the theme should just be LEICA.

Have a editorial group of 2 - 5 persons who decide which photos get in the book (and the approx sequence). Have 1 designer design the book and the sequence. The editors approve in the end.

If someone shot a nice Minilux shot, its great. Let it be his photo in there. But it has to be LEICA photographers. And if someone happened to use a Voightlander lens on his MP when he shot a super-great shot, let's consider that LEICA as well.

Who would want to buy and read a book where all photos are about one subject. I would not. Such conditions are for competitions, not an art book or aesthetic book.

The love of LEICA and photography, that's what should count.

Good idea. As with Peter I also have My Leica and I. It had some good tips as well as technical details about every photograph.

This suggestion is a non-starter in so far as people are paying to be a part of the effort.

Unless of course your idea is that first people submit photographs and then, if they are selected, they pay.

No sensible person will pay if they are not guaranteed a spot.

Additionally, let me say that many of the photographers here have a particular bias which is readily apparent from their commentary. A bias not against photography in general but certain types of photography which does not accord with their own time-worn and often calcified attitudes.

I do not think anyone here, except perhaps an enlightened few, could be honestly and truly objective.

That being said, I think it is best to avoid the notion of any editorial purview. It would run the risk of descending into prejudicial capriciousness.

For all of the reasons above, this will probably never happen. Already we have some who say only 'real' Leica cameras qualify, we have issues over copyright, content, a panel who will decide who will/won't be allowed to participate.......

These things work best when there is a dictatorship.

It's a good idea, but the coordination of it all will be a nightmare IMHO, not to mention collecting the 200 Euros from each person that was mentioned.

Thanks to the fantastic feetback!

yes, the logistic is a big problem to do it international!....but I think it is very important to do it global.

...I have no idea, how we get it to work without help of professionals out of the "printing seen"....

Jan, there are self publishing sites, I guess Lulu - www.lulu.com - is the best none. There was also one mentioned in the weeks Amateur Photographer in the UK, but I don't have the magazine to hand so I can't quote the URL. The cost for that was about £22 if I remember correctly. That was for a set number of pages, additional pages carried an additional charge.

I still think it would be a logistical nightmare though.

Over on RFF there have been two books published. You may want to ask some of those guys for some feedback on the process. Many of them are members here so it should be easy to reach them.

Here are a couple of links about the book and samples.
