Advertisement Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Hi semrich, Take a look here Assembling Vases. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
fotografr Posted November 1, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 1, 2006 I like the intense concentration evident in the craftsman and the hot light from his welding torch. I usually don't like clutter in an image but in this case I do because it shows the man's whole work environment.
Guest rubidium Posted November 2, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 2, 2006 I always enjoy images of artisans immersed in their craft. These are particularly well done.
robsteve Posted November 2, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2006 You can see the skill in how lightly he seems to be holding the welding rod. It is well done.
dan_drabek Posted November 2, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 2, 2006 Check out the thread "Polishing Vases #2" to get an idea of the complexity of the designs. This is a form of Cloisonne work. The baked enamel colors are separated by brazed metal filagree "dams". This man is attaching the filagree to the vase. You can imagine how much work it takes to create such a complex design. Yet one can buy a vase like this for not much money. Such a high level of skill for such low pay. Only in China. DD
semrich Posted November 2, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted November 2, 2006 Brent - As always, thanks for your comments. When I photograph someone at work, I see people doing whatever they need to in order to earn a living. Photographing them I am recording that and the context of that work is important. You have honored him by noticing his concentration. James - Thank you, you to have honored them as artisans. Robert - Also thanks, with noticing the skill and deftness with the welding rod. Daniel - Thank you, I can tell you are no stranger to this kind of work, and to the high levels of skill involved. These are just a few from a series of photos capturing the numerous steps involved in creating these items.
