C-Lux 2 running Lumix firmware?

Hi everyone, new boy here in need of advice.

I'm a freelance writer. I've got a D300 which I love, but more and more of my jobs are alongside professional photographers now, so I have been looking at small compacts to take with me for quick snaps rather than the DSLR.

I got myself a lovely little C-Lux 2 from a photographer friend who has never used it much so it's like new. It fits in my pocket perfectly. I've been using it for the last few days and am starting to gel with its sharp reflexes now. However, loading some shots into Aperture, I noticed the metadata was showing the camera as a DMC-FX33, and it has a Lumix sign off on shut down. Is this correct for the C-Lux 2? I would have imagined it would sign off as a C-Lux 2 - certainly plenty of C-Lux shots on Flickr. I believe I have read elsewhere how the Leica firmware is different to the Panasonic versions?

I don't have any discs for the camera, so is there somewhere I can download Leica firmware from, if that is what is required? There is nothing on the Leica site, but I can contact them direct if that is what is needed. I thought I'd ask the experts first, to see whether you could point a newbie at a secret online source!

Thanks all!

Welcome to the forum, John!

I don't have a C-Lux 2 but you can find lots of useful information on the official Leica website on this page. The only download software it shows is a driver for Windoze 98 so it appears that there hasn't been a software update.

I, too, would expect your C-Lux 2 to show a Leica logo on shutdown, not a Panasonic logo, and to show up as Leica software in the EXIF data so it sounds as if something might be awry.

Any owners care to comment?

Pete.

Something odd here......I have a Panasonic FX30 which is the equivalent of the Clux2, not the FX33 (which is a slighty later model with 1MP more).

There is no way to update firmware so I can only assume that your Clux has been repaired at some point by a Panasonic agent perhaps? Much is said about the different firmware but I've yet to see any conclusive proof in the end results - so as long as the camera is working OK I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys. All seems to be working OK on auto settings but not so sharp on manual, plus I would like it to be recording metas correctly etc. I'll ring Leica tomorrow.

Looking at D-Lux 4s now, not a huge deal if it stays as is.
