woody Posted April 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Central Park Zoo has two polar bears. One is psychotic and simply repeats a loop over and over again where he back-floats under water, kicks off the glass, floats underwater to the middle, kicks off the bottom and up for air, then back again. Here are three photos I took with the LX3. The first is of the bear kicking off the glass. The next two are of him kicking off the bottom, going up for air. If you'd like to see the video of this guy, I posted a few of his loop, also taken with the LX3. All in m4v format. Polar Bear Videos

stuny Posted April 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2009 Woody - These behaviors are a good reminder of how zoos frequently do not meet the needs of the animals. I especially like shots #1 & #3 since they give reference to people viewing the bear.
Martin T-M Posted April 2, 2009 Share #3 Posted April 2, 2009 Woody, excellent series despite the sad subject.
woody Posted April 3, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted April 3, 2009 Sadly, the zoo might be the only place to see a polar bear one day.
Martin T-M Posted April 3, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 3, 2009 Yes and it seems it will be very soon.
formernikon Posted April 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted April 5, 2009 Although I'm not a big fan of zoos, don't fall prey to the agenda of the man-made global warming crowd. Conservation statistics show that the numbers of polar bears are actually increasing. Al Gore and Michael Moore have very strict agendas (ie. follow the money). And neither of them have a week's worth of conservation knowledge.
woody Posted April 6, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted April 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like all scientific topics discussed in political arenas, this one has complexities that are easy to distort in short bursts of info for people who don't take time to do the research (on both both sides of the political spectrum). First Google hit on 'polar bear population' is: Polar Bears International - Ask The Experts I won't discuss it further here though. I'm just a photographer
formernikon Posted April 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 7, 2009 I agree, Woody. Your polar bear reminds me of a black bear at our local zoo when I was growing up. He/she displayed the same behavior. Sad. Not sure whether the bear was like that and then they put him in the zoo, or the zoo caused this behavior. Anyway, I enjoyed the photos. #1 really captured the size of those bears. And, I always like to see people involved in the photos that you know were taken somewhere other than in the wild.
vdb Posted April 7, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 7, 2009 Your photos make a strong statement here. I agree with Stuart.
