cbretteville Posted March 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was just told by the Norwegian distributor that all booked upgrades are now pushed back five (!) weeks due to lack of parts. This is worse than Mark reported a while back. That means my M8 is at the factory when I'm there during the Hessenpark meet, talk about irony - Carl
Advertisement Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Hi cbretteville, Take a look here All M8 upgrades delayed by five weeks. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mat_mcdermott Posted March 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 27, 2009 Trying to think positively about this: When I did my upgrade in New Jersey I was told that it would be at least two weeks for the parts (making the whole upgrade time over a month) but then got it back only a day or two more than was originally estimated. cbretteville Posted March 27, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted March 27, 2009 I booked my slot in December, it isn't as if they haven't been aware of the need for parts. - Carl
Guest Xing Posted March 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2009 Happenings like this are a big part of what make me cynical that a camera like the S2, aimed (supposedly) at working professionals, can be a sales success. Even with backups, one big thing a lot of pros I know stress about is service turnaround time, and any of them doing a little net research can find a ton of examples where Leica made people wait interminably. Terry Kelly Posted March 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 27, 2009 Not just upgrades In a recent fire I lost my M8 charger, Leica are currently out of stock of replacement chargers and despite many calls to Solms, my dealer cannot provide me with a scheduled date at present
sfokevin Posted March 27, 2009 Share #6 Posted March 27, 2009 5 weeks not bad... I booked with NJ in early last Sept... They called my slot in mid January... That was about 5 months!!!
amedick Posted March 27, 2009 Share #7 Posted March 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Terry I ended up with a brand new backup charger from Leica, after a charger failure, that has only about 1 hours use to verify it works. I could not wait for this replacement, so bought a replacement while travelling, which I have been using since. If you can not find a timely solution through a dealier, and are in the UK, I may be able to help you out, PM me if needed. Take Care John
cbretteville Posted March 27, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted March 27, 2009 5 weeks not bad... I booked with NJ in early last Sept... They called my slot in mid January... That was about 5 months!!! The delay is five weeks on a slot I was allotted in mid April when the upgrade was booked in December. The wait will be more than six months. That is bad. - Carl
Olsen Posted March 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted March 28, 2009 I am going to Singapore next week. I thought of bringing my 1Ds III only for bird photography in Malaysia, mostly, and send my M8 in for up grading in hope that it might be ready when I am back in May. As i understand: This just might not be realistic. This means that my M8 will not be upgraded before after the summer, the most busy photography season. sean_reid Posted March 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted March 28, 2009 I think there's more demand for this stuff than they expected. Longer term, production volume should be adjusted accordingly. Cheers, sean

jcraf Posted March 28, 2009 Share #15 Posted March 28, 2009 All of which begs the question - 'Do I REALLY need the upgrade THAT badly?' I was thinking of getting one of my M8s done. But, an M8 in the hand is worth 2 M8s in the bush (or Solms)...........
marknorton Posted March 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted March 29, 2009 I don't think Leica help themselves at all in smoothing demand and so help their planning (and I'm making the rash assumption here that there is some). A variety of disjointed rebates, cashbacks, price increases and delayed product introductions all conspire to create confusion and (I expect) wild variations in demand. Add in the fluctuating exchange rates and it just gets worse.

But, an M8 in the hand is worth 2 M8s in the bush (or Solms)........... Exactly. I am booking in for week 18 at Solms but I think I am going to forget it. In any case, a 1/8000 shutter camera would make a good second camera at some point in the future. LouisB
dodders Posted April 7, 2009 Share #18 Posted April 7, 2009 I have just been advised that my upgrade is delayed as well. The upgrade was booked during December last for week 13/2009. Leica received the camera on 18th March and it was in repair (where it still is according to their tracking system) by the 19th. After two weeks I e-mailed Solms for an update which is when I was told about the lack of parts until the end of April, a situation I consider to be apalling. As I am away for the first two weeks of May, the soonest I can recover my camera will be the 3rd week in May, some 5 months after the original booking for a job they proudly claim only takes 2 weeks, so no Leica for my holiday snaps. There has been no apology for the delay and no apology for not telling me. Along with most forum members I am rather devoted to my M8 and it is a shame that I am unable to be devoted to Leica as a company who seem to have a lot to learn about customer care and consideration. mman Posted April 7, 2009 Share #19 Posted April 7, 2009 Yep. Same over here in the States. Was told this morning that they are awaiting shutters. Not before early May. Oh well. Let's hope the work is done properly.
