semrich Posted October 27, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted October 27, 2006 Victor - Thanks, you may have noticed, this was shot from the waist, candid, range focused, aperture priority. I really got lucky. Paul - Thank you, atmosphere is nice term, maybe it is one of the reasons I like taking pictures at night so much.
kld Posted October 27, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 27, 2006 Superb photo, one of the best B&W I have ever seen. -- Klaus
fotografr Posted October 27, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 27, 2006 Very, very nicely done. I would agree this is one of the best I've seen from your collection. You have the light in just the right places with rich, deep blacks and just enough detail in the shadows. This may seem like a small thing, but I also like the way you managed to get the chestnut that is being turned in good focus. I've always been impressed with b&w images from the RD-1. If the M8 wasn't just around the corner, I'd be shooting with one.

PhotoArchival Posted October 28, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 28, 2006 Agree with everyone! Great "hip shot" by the way. It is a technique that I have to practice. Lovely atmosphere/lighting as mentioned by others.
semrich Posted October 28, 2006 Author Share #10 Posted October 28, 2006 Klaus - Thank you for the complement, you've expressed yourself in such a way that I'm at a loss for words to say more than just, Thank You. Brent - I appreciate your comments, I've seen you gallery. I agree about his turning the chestnut and the focus, zone focusing this from waist was a small part estimating the distance and the rest luck. I like the atmosphere of shots like this and enjoy taking them, in part because the R-D1 with Sumilux lenses does such a good job with them. I will have a Noctilux in my hands in about 3 weeks and am waiting on a pre-ordered M8. I expect it to be a light eating combination. Victor - Thanks again. Nikolaj - I also appreciate your comments as well, having seen you gallery. This shot with that light, except for the noise, almost makes it in color. Amado - Thanks, Victor convinced me to practice this, it turned out to be not so difficult with 35mm and even 50mm. With digital you take alot of shots, delete the ones you don't like, and post the ones you do. I carry my camera in a nondescrip olive drab Guess messenger bag with the strap adjusted to waist level. I rest the camera on it and get candid shots from a lower angle. Most people don't know I even have a camera.
