So many options... (looking for a camera)

I've been lurking for about a week now and have enjoyed reading these forums as they seem to be populated by enthusiastic photographers. Because of that I've come to ask for some advice. I'm ashamed to admit it but sitting in my closet is an SLR I haven't touched in far too long because I can't carrying it with me everywhere I go. I miss taking pictures and am on a hunt for a digital camera which is easy to carry around, starts up quickly (unlike my canon powershot s400) and is sub $700. Personally I love the feel of a film camera, weight, size, way they work and control they afford and wish I'd known what a rangefinder was earlier. Because of this I often feel that the digital cameras I look at in stores are toys... sure I love being able to just point and shoot but sometimes I'd really like to adjust a few things via some knobs like I can on my SLR without having to play around with a joystick...

I've been looking at the V-Lux 1 and D-Lux 3 over the past few days and on paper think I'd probably be happy with either.... but there are so many companies and so many cameras out there I wonder if there's something different or perhaps even an older model in my price range I'd be even happier with... anyone have any other ideas?

thanks, kevin.

Hi Dlux3 is great at 100-200iso is an incredible pocket cam -not just a pocket-full-of-noise-(you´ll hear this cruel :p expresion just in this forum) but what you get at iso 400 and higher is noise. V lux, I think have the same problem, and is about 600gr weight.

Take a look at Oly E400-SLR-, is 380gr I think about 400 with batteries , 600gr with standar lenses, and you can buy in the future, leica lenses, for 3/4 format.

If you like outdoor, landscape pictures, Dlux3 is a nice cam.

I would reccomend the Panasonic LC1.

The Leica Digilux 2 is identical, but will much fetch more money.

The LC1/D2 is much loved and has rightfully gotten many compliments on this sublime forum.

The LC1 is not a camera you can pocket, but is light and fits nicely in your hand.

I recently ran the Nike Run Hit Remix 5 mile with my LC1 in hand without a second thought.

Hi,

I fully understand your wish for a carry around camera! I felt the same way and bought a D-LUX2 and am very happy with it. I did a lot of looking around and if you want wide-angle, manual control and RAW files then this (or the D-LUX3/LX2) stands alone at the moment. Canon also have a highly regarded S80 and a new G7 I think.

The sun is going down here now and I will leave work early and take a few shots with D-LUX2 in the park en route to the station. That is the really great thing about it! It is always on me!

Good luck!

Ed

There are a lot of sample images on my pbase site if you are interested, any poor results you see there will be user related!!!!

Enrique, I've seen that expression here and there but am not dissuaded. My concerns in regards to the E400-SLR or V-Lux would be that their respective lenses wouldn't allow me to just drop them into my pocket though from some pricing I've seen they're both within my price range. And you made mention that the D-Lux would be a great outdoor/landscape camera, is there any reason to think I'd have problems indoors or are you just making reference to the 16:9 format?

Philip- The Digilux is what initially caught my interest; however, it's well out of my price range at the moment. Even though it's not pocket-able I don't think I could say no to that one!

Ed- Thats what I seem to be finding it looks like the Leica and similar Panasonic cameras are fairly unique in their abilities at the moment. I enjoyed looking through your gallery and noticed alot of outdoor shots, have you had much success indoors with your D-Lux?

Thanks for the ideas thus far! kevin.

Kevin, I have my dlux2 since a year ago. I have used the cam in every situation, because I love this little cam, I usually use it in raw mode and try to never use the flash. I have made good pics -in my opinion- some of them have been posted in the picture forum. Some nice portraits of my daughters at 200 ISO are splendid, but at 200 you have noise....not to much but is there. At 400 brrrrrrrr.

Thinks have not improved too much with the dlux3....more pixels in the same sensor and venus III engine, I think taht is the big mistake of this cam, because you will have watercolour, more than pics.

So.....I will buy anycase again my dlux2, because is an explendid cam I enjoy too much with it, has an incredible lenses, is able to shoot in raw mode and is fully manual.

The only problem with this sexy cam is noise.....you choose -remember I think is the same problem in all the actual compact cams-.

Have a good day:)

I'll definitely have to take a look at the dlux, I finally found a local store that carries them so I should get a peak at one this weekend if not sooner! :) kevin.

Kevin,

I had not really noticed but I do not really take a lot of indoor pictures.

As others have said the higher ISO's do introduce noise. Considerable noise at 400.

The image stabiliser works very well so you can keep the ISO down and hand hold shots of still subjects like paintings in fairly well lit buildings but for people shots you really require the flash. The flash is not very powerful but I still find myself turning the output down whenever I use it. You can get a nice mix with the ambient light then.

I will look for some indoor shots for you.

Have you tried a camera search on pbase by the way? There are a lot of photos taken with the LX1 and D-LUX2 on the site.

Cheers,

Ed
