Film M

I would still say an M6. It is a classic icon and available mint or near for about £700.00. I would ask, as some have commented why an MP? As far as I know MP stands for M Press but I would not think there are many photojournalists using film today as digital has so many advantages for press work. It is just a nostalgia thing and it is a lot of money for a nostalgia trip when an M6 classic will do all you need and more. If you start to earn a living using an M6, as many professional photographers do then, and only then, maybe an MP but I think you will have moved beyond one by then

??? Don't think they mean that, the camera's flash sync speed would still apply. You can only use leaf type shutters with flash at any speed.

I've never heard of the M Press story. I have the edition of LFI that came out when the MP was released. According to the people who designed the camera, MP stood for mechanical perfection. (Yet another example of Leica's modesty).

Both are wonderful cameras but as an MP user, I don't wonder what it would be like to use the M6 classic ;)

I bought a used M8 last year, and just recently got an M7 starter kit for around $2500 USD. Comes with a 50mm Cron, and a 1 year Leica warranty on both. Great compliment to the M8 IMHO.

Where'd you find the M7 kit for $2500?

That is like stealing!

:D

The Leica MP was originally released in 1956, based on the M3 and sold with a Leicavit base. I don't know if the P stands for Press though. The 'new' MP has revived the name and 'Mechanical Perfection' is just come clever copy writing.

I don't think it is a story. Cameras with a P designation have always been classified as press cameras. They did not contain the refinements demanded by amateurs like lightmeters. A photojournalist knew instantly what to set their lenses at and also press cameras were less likely to go wrong because the lacked sophistication and were usually less expensive because of it. As far as the term mechanical perfection is concerned then maybe there is some truth in that statement but I would this it really is marketing hype to get customers to spend more

holy moly, what else can I say, so many good posts, thank you all. i collect images, i snap what i see, people, places, things. i own 3 lenses 90m f2, 50 m f1.2, 16-18-21m f4. looking at a 28mm. i experiment, i use manual xp control and would probably buy the sekonic hand held metre. i love textures, long slow exposures. i am new to photography but have managed to collect 30 odd thous snaps in the past 4 years when i began with a digilux 2 which i love. i shoot raw and play in lightroom , hope to learn photoshop, maybe. i live in a tiny iconic kiwi village which just happens to have a collection of pro photographers. i have managed to put together an exhibition and have work in 3 galleries, have even managed to part people from their pockets :) basically i am a film maker, 40 years of editing tvc's, so am totally open to ideas . . .

I suggest the MP because I would rather not deal with the inconvenience and the added expense of a CLA, which an M6 is much more likely to need. I also like to put my OWN scratches on the camera. :D

Hello Richard,

Here is Yau-Sun from Canada. Very nice to see you also on Leica forum. And you now using a M9!

Today I am just working on the light table, look at the wonderful slides shot with my Leica M6, M7 and R9 from our "Tea-Horse Trail" expedition last month in western China, selecting some slides for a slide-show projection here for the Public here in the Fall-season.

Looking forward to seeing your M9 images soon...
