Converting R lenses to Nikon mount

I got impatient waiting for the mythical R10 as successor for the DMR and bought a Nikon D700. I am thinking of having some of my R glass converted to Nikon with the Leitax bayonet and would appreciate feedback from users with first hand experience, pros and cons.

Thanks in advance

I did the conversion a few days ago with the 180/2.8 pre apo . First the conversion assuming you buy the inexpensive tools is easy and takes maybe 10 minutes. Second ..the results are excellent. My D3 s focus confirmation is pretty accurate and the lens handles well. I am looking forward to the high ISO performance .

The process is reversible and appears straightforward. This will depend on the lens chosen and the complexity of the cam and light baffles.

Even with the Leica glass the D3 doesn t match the DMR at lower ISO s ..especially for color saturation . I think I will be able to get it closer with the right camera profiles .

I am also reluctant to modify my expensive R glass...I still have several of the older formulas and they aren t worth much. The 180 pre apo sells for less than $400. My guess is with the R10 you will want some sort of ROM and it will not be worth converting ...so my risk is low.

Stop down metering. The D3 seems very bright with the 180 and I use it at 5.6 without problems in focusing. Today I shot surfers from the local pier and could follow focus . Did a quick test and posted it at the Getdpi forum. Its here New Life :Leica R lens on Nikon D3 - The GetDPI Workshop Forums

Digilloyd just posted a test of the 180Apo on the D3x...."show off" ....the 180 APO is as good as it gets and on a D3X . But thats expensive glass to be messing with the mount.

One concern was the baffling which is removed to fit the mount. I shot directly into the sun and tried 4-5 strong backlighting tests ....the 180 pre apo didn t flare much and actually seemed to work better than my 180 APO .

I didn't find this, can anyone help me?

I changed three R-Lenses to Leitax bajonett to use them with a D3x, and whilst I'm very happy with the 90 AA, I'm a bit frustrated with the Elmarit 180/2.8 and Summicron 180/2.0. After some testing, I would say that the result with those lenses are good ....... even very good. Unless you make a comparisson with a Nikon 180/2.8 ED  The Nikon is better, gives more contrast and details. I would like to discuss with someone the results, as I'm not sure if this is a problem of the Leitax-Mount or something else.

Stephan,

Lloyd's test of the 180 APO is in the subscriber only area of his web site. It's actually a group test with the Nikon 180/2.8 ED-IF, Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR, Nikon 70-300/4.5-5.6 VR, Tamron 70-200/2.8 and Voigtlander 180/4 APO
