Finnkare Posted February 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone got their hands on the new 1,4x-viewfinder magnifier yet? I'm mostly considered, whether it will make the bottom part of the M5 finder invisible, so that the exposure metering and/or the shutter speed isn't available for the shooters eye? I don't have glasses. I have a third party 1,25x-magnifier, and it doesn't block the info. The magnifier is a bit thicker than the Leica one, I heard, so it makes it even harder for me to evaluate the effect of the 1,4x one. The 1,4x seems quite thick, most likely even thicker than the 1,25 that i have. In about a month from now, we're probably losing the last shop that keeps Leica stuff on its shelves. The shopkeeper is retiring and hasn't found anyone to continue. So I won't most likely be able to check it myself. Of course I would be extremely grateful to that person, who could check it for me with an M5... If not with an own one, then with a shop's one. Thanks in advance. Advertisement Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Hi Finnkare, Take a look here The 1,4x viewfinder magnifier (with an M5). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Finnkare Posted June 29, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted June 29, 2009 Still anyone tested the 1,4x magnifier?
ALUX Posted June 29, 2009 Share #3 Posted June 29, 2009 I don't own one of these, but I've tried it last Photokina on my Leica MP. I found the angle of view too narrow to be usefull - I could hardly see the complete 50mm frame. I'm quite sure that with the M5 you won't be able to see the exposure meter. Best regards, Alex
treeplanter Posted June 30, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2009 I use the 1.4X magnifier on my 0.72 MP. 50mm is useable, but it seems optimized for the 75mm focal length. Works well with the 90mm length too. Jim B.
Finnkare Posted June 30, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted June 30, 2009 Yes, I thought already it would be mainly for the teles, with the 75 as "ideal". So for a "real tele-M" one should buy the .85 or an M3 and magnify it with 1,25 or 1,4, so that 90 or 135mm would be ideal. It should change the .72 magnification to 1, quite excactly. Is it a big deal? Wonder how it compares to the .91 magnification of M3. With or without the third party 1,15x magnifier.
Finnkare Posted May 6, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted May 6, 2014 I'll bump this up since it has had its fifth anniversary already . So: any more inputs?
Michael Geschlecht Posted May 6, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 6, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Finncare, If you had an M3 you might not need any additional magnifier for a 50, 90 or 135. An M3 is just as nice of a camera to use as an M5. The major difference other than the built in, as opposed to external, meter is that the M3 is better designed to optimize focussing & viewing with the longer focal lengths of 90 & 135. With a a 50mm lens the +'s & -'s of 1 or the other more or less even themselves out. Best Regards MCMLXXXIII, Michael.

Yes I know, I have both and I largely agree with you; the M3 is a pleasure to frame, especially because of the almost 1:1 finder, but then again, the M5 is very handy in metering, also because of the clear focusing area and very intuitive analog scale. That was my whole point: can the 1,4x magnifier be used to combine the best of both worlds: a 1:1 viewfinder on the M5, with the metering scale and (almost all of) the 50mm frameline visible? a.noctilux Posted May 11, 2014 Share #9 Posted May 11, 2014 Hello, M5 with x1.4 magnifier is barely usable with 50mm. Maybe x1.25 is more suitable.
