Simon... Posted February 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've borrowed a Leica M6 for the week, and it's just awesome! But I'm wondering how far away infinity focus is. Because when I focus at something that seems more than 20 meters/65 feets away the linies in the viewfinder is not in focus... So I'm thinking that ether infinity is much longer away then I really think or there's something wrong with the lens or body... By the way, it's not much of focus, just a tiny tiny bit... Simon.. Advertisement Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi Simon..., Take a look here How much is infinity focus?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Maarten Posted February 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2009 Dear Simon, Be assured, most likerly there is nothing wrong with your camera. Infinity doesn't start at 20 meters but more at 20 kilometers. Most people check infinity on a bright star or planet at night. During daylight you can try a remote church tower (but make sure it's remote!). Enjoy the M6! Maarten

Simon... Posted February 11, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted February 11, 2009 Make the lender a good offer, then you can enjoy it to eternity - however long that may be! Dave. I would love to do that, and I also think that I will do it one day. But sadly I don't think I have enough money right now to do so...
UliWer Posted February 11, 2009 Share #6 Posted February 11, 2009 I read in Günter Osterloh's book about the Leica M (p. 77) that the mathematical equivalent to infinity for Leica lenses is (was?- the book is from 1990) 170141411834605 meters. Though i presume you would not care about the difference to 170141411834604 meters in your viewfinder.
odyocu Posted February 12, 2009 Share #7 Posted February 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I check infinity focus of my Leica cameras using bright full moon. That sure is infinity. It's very easy to accurately focus the moon, when there are no lights in the room and when the sky is clear. Seyhun
E.M Posted February 12, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 12, 2009 Infinity focus depends on the lens, for a 35 mm lens infinity starts at 35 meters. For a 50 mm it is 50 meters and so on. Etienne Michiels

odyocu Posted February 12, 2009 Share #11 Posted February 12, 2009 Now I see why I have those problems. Thanks. But seriously, it's quite easy and a dependable way. I find close and intermediary focus problems to be more pronounced in the results, while infinity errors usually can't be noticed as much fortunately.
