M3 finder replacement

I recently bought a M3 in otherwise good condition, but with a rangefinder that's lacking contrast. The seller said that there's something wrong with the mirroring and that the replacement will be very expensive.

I'd like to know, which finders are transferrable to the M3. That would help me finding a beaten-up M with a working rangefinder... The seller thought an M2 or M4 finder would at least be suitable, but he said others might fit too. Anyone have any idea?

Of course it would be a shame to replace an M3 finder with a different one, but I can imagine there's not that many M bodies available with the finder working but not much else. Well, fortunately it's usable as it is, at least with a super wide... The body was quite cheap, at least considering the well working shutter.

Hi,

You might want to look here. Peter Grisalfi at CRR Luton (UK) is a great guy on this side of the pond for Leica servicing. He's serviced our Queen's Leica, so can't be bad. You can have your M£ VF resilvered and rebuilt for £145 measly UK pounds (plus 20% if you're overseas according to his site). His work is right up with the very best. He's looked after my M2 and done a great job - better than someone in the US who does quite a bit of work.

M2/3/4 Rangefinder Restoration

Best wishes,

Hi,

M2, M4 or any other M rangefinder will not fit to an M3, even M3 rangefinders will not fit to

any other M3. It depends on serial numbers and the reason are some cutouts in the casting

that some M3 rangefinders have and others don´t. If you can get a second M3 of the same

batch changing the rangefinder is possible but not easy because you need some special

tools for adjustment. I would look for a better M3 and keep the bad one for spares or send

the one you have to Luton.

Cheers

Jo
