Four Thirds is an 'open standard' so you can use any 4/3 lenses, although not all have the aperture ring as on the Leica lens (so you set via the camera). You can also fit many other lenses, i.e. Leica R mount lenses with adaptors. You are probably aware that the Digilux 3 is effectively discontinued and Leica appear to have dropped out of the format. Many people are raving about the new Micro 4/3 Panasonic G1 which can use any Leica LTM or M fit lenses with an adaptor. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Many people are raving about the new Micro 4/3 Panasonic G1 which can use any Leica LTM or M fit lenses with an adaptor. oh no..... just my luck! finally I found a camera that intrested me and it no longer exists! ;-) I saw the G1... Leica also have quite a few excellent lenses available for the D system. However, if you have M lenses already then I would look at the G1 (I'm also looking at the moment). I would still wait just a little while longer though - Olympus is sure to release their Micro 4/3rds camera, and I'm pretty certain that it is going to be an awesome camera. andit Posted February 9, 2009 Share #7 Posted February 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Alexander, Micro 4/3rds is the new standard for the 4/3rds system. It retains the original sensor size of 18 x 13.5 mm. What has changed is that they have dropped the rapid return mirror, mirror box and optical viewfinder thereby reducing the focal plane of the lenses. This simplifies the design of the lenses. This is also why you are able to use M lenses on this camera. The M series never had the mirror assembly - so the last lens element was always very close to the shutter. This makes the design more compact, much like the M system. The G1 has a 12.1 megapixel sensor - the reviews that it has received at DP Review are amazing. Certainly worth looking at as a backup body for the M8. Olympus have announced a camera that resembles a digital rangefinder. I have attached some images of what the new Olympus camera could look like - bear in mind that this uses the exact same sensor as the Panasonic G1 and you can mount Leica M lenses, focusing will be done via a live view in the LCD screen. andit Posted February 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 9, 2009 Forgot to mention that the Field Of View correction of Micro 4/3rds is x2. That means that a 50mm Summicron effectively becomes a 100mm. This may not be good news for wide angle users, but then the cv 15mm Heliar will become a 30mm. For wildlife this is real good though - 135mm becomes a 270mm - awesome! There is a massive photo event coming up in the next couple of weeks (either Photokina or PMA - not sure which one). I would not be surprised if they launch it then. Leica is also expected to launch a coupe of new products, including an 18mm lens, a new flash unit and a possible digital CL - there has been much speculation here on the forum.
