SD Card Reader Recommendation?

I've always used Sandisk cards, and have used (and been happy with) USB2 Sandisk readers. Sandisk has sold SD cards with a reader included in the past; I don't know if they still do, but the readers are inexpensive.

When I had a MacBook Pro, I used a Belkin expresscard reader. They're fast, and can be left in the Expresscard slot so they're always there when you want them. More expensive than a USB reader.

I'd stick to USB 2 as firewire is almost a dead technology. I don't think it is being offered on notebooks anymore, or at least not many notebooks. Where as USB 2 is offered on every computer sold today.

I think Firewire readers are more expensive then USB 2 readers.

Also make sure the reader is SDHC compatible. There are some still being sold that aren't.

Certain makers are offering USB 2 SDHC card reader with the purchase of a SDHC card. These are usually small portable readers but they work just like the desktop units.

Personally I don't care for the multi card readers and have a Lexar dual reader for SD/SDHC & CF cards. I also have one of the portable readers that came with a SDHC card I bought. I carry the portable one in my camera bag just in case I need to get some images off a card when I'm not at home and I'm using one of my notebooks or some one elses computer.

I use a no name card reader I got from Hong Kong which is SDHC compliant with a claim speed of 150X for $2.99, free shipping. I have used it with my Transcend SDHC 8GB card as well as the older 4GB cards with no problem, although I did not do any scientific testing to verify the transfer rate. At this price I am not asking too many questions.

Is there a USB or Firewire SD card reader I should be looking at as I move to purchase one for my D-Lux 4?

Firewire would seem a bit pointless since USB/USB2 is so, well, universal. Sandisk sells a good compact one with their cards that will work very well even if you loose the small plastic caps for the USB connector and SD card slot.

The only thing better is an Express Card slot reader mentioned in one of the other replies, if you use a MacBook Pro. You can leave it in the slot and not have to worry about an extra "thing".

I asked Hoodman why there are no FireWire readers for SD cards, and they replied that the data cannot be read from the card faster than the speed offered by USB 2.

RAW Secure Digital-Hoodman Corporation

I use a Lexar FW reader to import big files from CF cards. In real world terms, FW is significantly faster than USB 2.

For SD cards, I purchased a new DGHC-capable USB 2.0 reader (an inexpensive "Multi" made in China) which is comparatively fast for the much smaller files coming out of the DL 4.

Actually ... you're talking about 30 seconds or 45 seconds of download time card to PC/Mac ... OK, a minute ...

- buy a name (Sandisk is Ok and has added value that they have a program to recover accidentally wiped cards, but hey, there's more of those progs out there AND we don't make mistake slike that :p)

- buy cheap and spend your money on other things

- don't worry too much about the gimmicks (it's about taking photos, remember :D)

Mike, I tried to get a fw reader to work and didn't have much luck. I ended up with a Lexar one and it sits idle.

I use -- very successfully -- usb readers. I have a pair of Sandisk MultiMate 12-in-1 readers (and writers...) and a little thing that came with one of my SDHC cards. this is much smaller, from Digitalmatrex, and also works just fine.
