I don't blame Leica for saying no. They are a business and need to protect their market wherever they can. Considering the number of scammers out there I would not want to have my company sponsoring a buy/sell area only to be later sucked into the mess when someone gets ripped off. I can see the quotes now...."I got ripped of on the Leica Camera forum....."

Dan

Surely if only registered and known members were allowed to buy/sell the chances of that sort of thing happening would be drastically reduced, although I have to accept it could happen.

I guess the Leica people see how the cat jumps.

They try to prevent loss in sales of new eqipment wherever they can. Their dealers included. From this site I got the information that Leica has bumped up prices for camera check-ups to a prohibitive level.

For a better understanding. Camera dealers usually send in used cameras to the manufacturer for a check-up before they resell them (because they assume liability). The costs of camera check-ups beat down the price you will get from the dealer for your used equipment. I think this market has already crashed.

To keep things consistent it's logical that a forum market for used equipment is forbidden.

Where have you read this on this forum?

How much is a prohibitive level?

My M2 was recently CLA'd by Leica and it cost me around £100

My R8 is currently on its way back from Solms, having been CLA'd plus damage repaired, and it will cost me less than £200

Doesn't seem to unreasonable to me.

I am pretty certain that most dealers make a check of basic functions themselves and then put the s/h gear in the window - I really doubt that they go to the time/expense of sending cameras back to manufacturers etc.

In fact I know of a dealer who would sell mint/boxed items as new if they were still current models......

Andy, I didn't hear that on this forum. As I wrote it is a dealer's information. The whole thing I described applies to Germany. €700 (maybe includes some adjustments, this is not unusual for an used M camera) is prohibitive.

dealers reselling price/M6: approx. €1000-1500

Leica Service: €700

dealers margin: 200 maybe

dealers overhead costs: 100 maybe

Not much left the dealer can pay for your used M camera.

That must be one bad condition M6 to require 700 euros worth of attention.

In the U.S., at any rate, a Leica Certified camera carries a one year warranty. Dealers send them in for a check because certified cameras are a good selling point. That might add $125 to the cost, but 700 Euros seems extreme.

So we discovered that in the US we have no prohibitive pricing in the used equipment market, contrary to he German market.

To keep things consistent it's logical that a forum market for used equipment should be allowed but limited to the international forum. :D

I bought two fine equipments from a fellow forum member that posted a brief note in the Leica Customer Forum. I am Completely satisfied with my purchase!!! There is a certain level of built in trust here. Maybe keep it simple in the Customer Forum area, with a unique icon or some sort of indication on the title stating that one have Leica stuff to sell. Those not interested can just skip the thread.

What we want to avoid are those nasty name calling and disputes when the sale did not go through as planned. The forums are sometime blamed for it and the Admin has to intervene. We have enough problems with Trolls.

I can remember when the great European pass time next to football was trying to figure ways around taxes and tariffs the whole economy of countries like Andorra were based on smuggling. Things must have changed with the EU.

Leica have made it quite clear that they don't want any sales via the forum. We're all guests at their party.

James, maybe te legal situation in your country is different from Germanies'. The dealer has to give guarantee to his customers, even for used cameras.

Most dealers give 3 or 6 months g'tee on used equipment, but they can also choose to offer items 'sold as seen' i.e. no comeback once you've bought the item. We have certain legal rights under the sale of goods act, but as for dealers routinely sending gear back for servicing etc before they sell it, I really don't think that happens in reality, unless of course there was an acutal fault found.

The transactions referred to took place in the old forum--not this one. The rules have always been followed.

As far as the reasoning that Leica prefer to not reduce new equipment sales due to competition from members listing items, I don't think that is good logic. Whenever I sell one of my old lenses or camera bodies, it is invariably for the purpose of buying a new replacement from a Leica dealer.

We had that discussion already several times in the old forum as well as in the new German forum. The simple answer is NO, still NO although a lot of us expressed big interest.

So maybe you can also start making noise, then it is more likely to happen. Best would be also sending direct request to Leica, they are still the ones who take final decisions.

Would Mercedes Benz let us sell our used benz at their official website?

Our used benz is a used car, let's face it so good luck.

They will only sell a...

Mercedes Benz Certified Preowned Vehicle.

C'mon guys, selling a used Leica is just a competition to a potential buyer of a new Leica.

Now let's talk about market share if that idea will do any help.

Just my 2 cents.
