GMB Posted January 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recognize that this may have been discussed in one of the long G1 threats. But they are so long that many of the relevant information is lost. So I dare to ask where to get an M lens adapter for the G1 ine Europe. I hear talk about the use of M lenses on this camera but know one seems to have the adapter. Georg

elgenper Posted January 31, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 31, 2009 ......So I dare to ask where to get an M lens adapter for the G1 ine Europe. I hear talk about the use of M lenses on this camera but know one seems to have the adapter. ... Here´s where I bought mine: Speed Graphic for camera accessories, photographic equipment and materials. They carry the Novoflex adapters, so that´s what I got. Very fast and good service indeed (I´m in Sweden, but it took no longer than it would from a Swedish seller). Bad news is, when I checked their site just now, the adapter is on back order..... mreddington Posted January 31, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 31, 2009 Per, As you know there is some concern about the the first production run of the Novoflex adapter (Novoflex M adapter recall? - The GetDPI Workshop Forums) and this should be solved with the new production run (so is not a problem for those that are back-ordered). You seemed to be less worried by this in that getdpi thread and since I am wondering whether I should return mine I would be interested in your experience. elgenper Posted January 31, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 31, 2009 Per, As you know there is some concern about the the first production run of the Novoflex adapter (Novoflex M adapter recall? - The GetDPI Workshop Forums) and this should be solved with the new production run (so is not a problem for those that are back-ordered). You seemed to be less worried by this in that getdpi thread and since I am wondering whether I should return mine I would be interested in your experience. Well, at once when mounting and trying it, I noticed that the focussing scale was a bit off on all my Leica lenses. They do focus to infinity, however, but at settings around 5 m (depends on the focal length, of course) for the 50 mm. This is indeed a minor nuisance, and if I could simply walk into a shop and get a replacement, I would certainly do so. But, I now have adapters for both Leica thread mount, Leica R, and Nikon F that all depend on the M-to-MFT one, and this last item is back ordered from Novoflex. Were I to return it, I´d have to wait some time for the replacement, and during that time I would be without means to mount anything but the kit zooms on the G1. So, I decided to wait and live with the nuisance for a while. Once that 20/1.7 is out, my need for fast legacy lenses will be a bit less, and maybe I´ll get the adapter exchanged by then. Remember: the present adapter doesn´t harm neither camera nor lenses in any way, and all lenses are focussable to infinity. So, the issue is just that the infinity stop and the focussing scales are off.
mreddington Posted January 31, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks. I guess I can live with it since I tend to focus with the LCD or LVF rather than with the distance scale on the lens. Experience will tell whether I want the hassle of sending it back.
jankap Posted February 1, 2009 Share #10 Posted February 1, 2009 Hello It seems to be, that the G1 has a greater tolerance for the lens back. You find in the MFT standard an about dimension of 20 mm. That means 19.50 to 20.49 mm. See the discussion in the four thirds forum. I believe, you will not be lucky with adapters. The M-lens leads a lot of superb corrected light into the camera. An amount of 75% have to be absorbed by the adapter. That means, that the adapter must have very high quality coatings to avoid contrast loss. The focal distance doubles. So for instance the super wide angle Tri-Elmar becomes a moderate wide angle. We can hope, that Leica developes wide angles for the FTs and the MFTs some time. But will they develop lenses for a non Leica? Jan
sean_reid Posted February 2, 2009 Share #11 Posted February 2, 2009 There are no optical elements in the M-mFT adapters. Stephen Gandy at CameraQuest Home has a model that works well. Cheers,
jankap Posted February 3, 2009 Share #12 Posted February 3, 2009 Hello Sean An (this) adapter is an optical element! Greetings Jan
sean_reid Posted February 4, 2009 Share #13 Posted February 4, 2009 Jan, The mFT to M adapters are really nothing more than fancy spacers. They just hold the lens further away from the the sensor. Cheers,
petermcwerner Posted February 4, 2009 Share #14 Posted February 4, 2009 There is an excellent China-made adapter available now at half the price. A discussion about it can be found on The China-made Leica M -> m4/3 Adapter - The GetDPI Workshop Forums I have received mine today and prefer it to the much more expensive Novoflex that I also have Cheers Peter
dkCambridgeshire Posted February 6, 2009 Share #15 Posted February 6, 2009 I bought an M adaptor via Ebay from Italy here Adapter Leica M - PANASONIC G1 micro 4/3 four thirds su eBay.it For 35mm SLR, Camera Lenses, Photography ... it appears to be the same as the Chinese adaptor. I didn't buy from China because I was not sure how much the duty and VAT and Royal Mail collection fee might be. It should arrive within 5 days. And I did not order from USA as price there is considerably more than the £80 Italian offer. My Mk I 28mm Elmarit M c.1966 is obviously not going to be compatible with the adaptor and the G-1 because of the protruding rear element. Can anyone advise me if the Mk III 28mm Elmarit M is compatible? I've seen several Mk IIIs on offer. Cheers dunk
