MV8 Posted January 30, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, not even two weeks ago I received my new LEICA ELMARIT-M 2.8 28 mm ASPH and the plastic piece that snaps the hood on the lens already broke off, it might of even came that way and didn't notice it until just the other day. Contacted Service in NJ this morning but I haven't heard anything from them yet. They have been good it the past so hoping they will send me replacement soon. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem, I can't see how they haven't considering it's so cheaply made. thanks Manny
Advertisement Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Hi MV8, Take a look here Cheap Plastic hood on ELMARIT-M 28 mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 30, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2009 It is cheap, though probably not in money for the replacement. Heavystar sells very nice rangefinder-type screw-in metal hoods for 39 mm thread. The 35/50 type should do well on the 28 and the M8. Image lifted from the Heavystar site. Shootist Posted January 30, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 30, 2009 If it is a NEW lens they come with a Passport warranty and Leica will replace the hood for nothing. I personally don't find the hoods that cheaply made. I have 2 of them, the same hood is used on both the 28 Elmarit and the 35 Cron.
jaapv Posted January 30, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 30, 2009 And the Summicron 35 asph.
trs Posted January 30, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 30, 2009 Broke? Which part? I should be careful I guess. I don't have problem with the hood, but the cap is darn hard to keep it there. It just falls of for no reason. I think it actually does not clip on easily. Many close calls on completely loosing it. Many times, I am tempted to take the hood off and use the other lens cap instead that seem more sturdy.
delander † Posted January 30, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2009 Dont lose the hood cap it is not cheap, I know. The first time I lost I had to get another. The second time I went back and managed to find it. Jeff

I had the same experience as you all!... After replacing (there must be a village in China that makes a fortune making those things...)... I ended up putting a piece of black gaffer tape on the bottom of cap & hood to create a kind of hinge so it just flops down for use
icqcq Posted January 31, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 31, 2009 You guys use lens caps? Hm. Lens goes on camera, all three caps (lens front & rear and body cap) all go in the bag. When it goes back in the bag it gets the cap, otherwise the lens is just nekkid. They just get in the way, or they get lost.
MV8 Posted January 31, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted January 31, 2009 Thanks to all for replys, haven't heard anything from service in NJ however! will follow up on Monday and let you know. Manny
magd0328 Posted February 3, 2009 Share #11 Posted February 3, 2009 I was rather surprised when I got my 28mm elmarit asph. to see that it shares the same hood as the 35mm f2. I actually shot shot test frames at various apertures, to make sure it didn't cause any vignetting (it doesn't seem to). I guess this was a cost saving measure. The replacement cost of the hood is phenomenal, about the same price as a canon 17-55 f3.5-5.6 IS lens on ebay.
okw3188 Posted May 2, 2009 Share #12 Posted May 2, 2009 On my Elmarit ASPH, the hood is 12526, on my 35mm f2 Summicron pre-ASPH, the hood is 12524, but they are interchangeable.
