Excellent guess, it's one of those two we are looking for.

These two were contemporaries, and it is said they knew each other. But only one of them resided in the location in the photo.

The name of the important city during the Tang periode will lead you to the name of our master, and also to the name of the monastery in the photo.

It was not easy, but really interesting.

Didn't realize that Blue Dragon Temple, with the modern buildings behind.

Kūkai met Huiguo at the Blue Dragon Temple, Xian ( Chang'an by then )

to study Esoteric Buddhism

You solved the riddle, congratulations. Will you post a photo now?

PS They still remember Kūkai in Xi'an.

In the garden of the monastery there is a statue of Kūkai and his teacher Huiguo who introduced him in esoteric Buddhism.

Thanks Dirk.

After this very nice enigma, I don't have interesting photo to post.

Sorry.

I pass my turn.

Next member can post the next one, please.

Kūkai :

"As soon as he saw me, the abbot [Huiguo] smiled, and said with delight, "Since learning of your arrival, I have waited anxiously. How excellent, how excellent that we have met today at last! My life is ending soon, and yet I have no more disciples to whom to transmit the Dharma. ..."

...

Huiguo began an intensive training of Kūkai that ended when he died in 805 CE. While the tantric tradition largely died out in China, the lineage survived in Japan as the Shingon school.

Well, after searching a bit, I've found one picture.

Please name the place and ( ...to be in phase with the former enigma) the name of the bicycle rider.

That is him so artistically represented, in balinese style, WOJ  Dutch artist visiting Bali in 1904.

Dirk, that is quick.

I wonder how you had found so quickly ?

Your turn, then.
