thighslapper Posted October 23, 2014 Share #14582 Posted October 23, 2014 correct ..... and some other part of your guess was astute ..... but the building is now a museum of something that was originally harvested primarily from the sea...... you just need the location now ..... thighslapper Posted October 23, 2014 Share #14586 Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) I surrender..... Ok you are technically correct ...... But it is now the AMBER MUSEUM. Gdansk is full of amber shops and is a major processor of amber which is now mined ..... rather than harvested from the sea .... mostly in Yantarny in Kaliningrad which is the Russian enclave next door to that part of the Baltic Coast. Amber is still found on the Gdansk part of the Baltic Coast after storms ... it is disturbed from the seabed .... and as it floats it gets washed ashore..... The history of Amber is fascinating ...... it was one of the first 'gems' traded by prehistoric man and was found all over europe as a result. I have a pile I bought from a Polish importer .... including many pieces with insects and bits of plants ...... he buys from Russian dealers across the border in what at one time was an area a bit like the wild west ... with regular shootings and robberies - before Putin ordered the area to be cleaned up and the production put under state control again ...... http://www.ambergallery.lt/en/disp.php?itm=en_museums_3%2Fen_museums_3_5 http://agentur-focus.de/Lightboxen/ANGEBOTE/FEATURES/2014/Wirtschaft/KozminBernstein/index.html Over to you ..... stuny Posted October 26, 2014 Share #14598 Posted October 26, 2014 Perhaps sub tropical.
dem331 Posted October 26, 2014 Share #14599 Posted October 26, 2014 This is French revival architecture, a hideous mixture of medieval, baroque, and God knows what else. Probably built by a filthy rich American, English or German industrialist in the second half of the 19th century. If I had to guess, I would say Germany (Rhur region), or England. Could posibly be US but I doubt it. I think Thighslapper's second picture of the tropical garden is a deliberate "unhelpful" clue :--)
thighslapper Posted October 26, 2014 Share #14600 Posted October 26, 2014 Michael is correct with England ...... The fact the house looks French is no coincidence .... as Enrique suggests ... but this family were not industrialists .... This is inside ....... Welcome, dear visitor!
