Thanks Andreas.

Ok, this is another easy one.

Where were we hiking?

Extra *point" if you name the exact location :-).

Will take some hours for me to answer...

No Ian, not Mount Etna.

...covered with volcanic residue.

Very well spotted Stuart :-).

There are other hints in the foto: I think it can be seen that it was pretty cold at this "point", and the colleague in our middle still wears his headlamp; we actually had to start shortly after midnight to reach that "point". And sun is not far above horizon...

It took us another hour or so to get to the place were we wanted to go...

There is another traitor in the foto :-).

OK, was probably not as easy as I thought.

Here is another foto, taken 2 days before we reached the "point" (which was not the final goal). In total it was a 6 days hike.

PS Sorry for the bad quality. The fotos were scanned in 2000, flat bed scanner at that time.

Name of the bridge or city:

I see Greek letters, but the buildings in the background do not look Greek at all, more like somewhere in America, on the east coast maybe.

Maybe this one makes it easier:

Yes!!!

It´s up to you to post the next one.:)

Thank you, I will look later today. My photo library is currently locked up as Aperture makes an update.

I have happy memories of Eisener Steg. We used to live on the Sachsenhausen side of the bridge and I crossed it each morning on my way to and from work. It was possibly the coldest place in the city in the middle of winter. My daughter was also born in the hospital just a few metres from the bridge on Christmas day.

The quotation, according to my clever wife is from Homer's Odyssey - literally " while sailing over a wine dark sea to people of another language.. ". Possibly not a reference to the bridge linking the two rival towns of Frankfurt and Sachsenhausen.

Until later.

I suspect the smart ones can even name the street.
