Yes it is a pingo, though in its very final phase, and yes it is located close to Tuktoyatuk (Nunavut-Canada).

A pingo, to try to put it in simple terms, is a lens of ice that has grown at the rate of about 1 cm per year, under loose soil, in a permafrost area, to be able to attain 30m/ 90 ft in height. Owing to erosion, and creep, over time, the top will collapse thus exposing ice to sun rays and in the end melting said ice lens. Similar to the underground accumulation of lava, it is sometimes called a hydrolaccolith from the greek hydro, lakkos meaning cistern an litho meaning stone.

This explains the previously mentioned analogy with Iceland.

Tuktoyaktuk peninsula is the location of choice and contains close to 1500 of these pingos (inuktituk for conical hill). Some can be found in Russia.

Here are two images of pingos at youth and maturity as well as a glimpse of a local tradition to wet your appetites to get to know better our Northern populations.

The area is gaining interest as drilling for oil and the construction of an associated pipeline along the Mackenzie are close to be underway.

I think that we have 2 winners. The first question to be answered was the name of the landform, hence dcoombs could be the winnner, yet aarflot was the first to mention Tuk as it is pronounced in the North.

Not being the one to set rules, i'll let the officials decide...

That's right! To the right, out of the picture, is the famous Hollywood sign on the hillside. These are the Santa Monica Hills, Mulholland Drive and all that.

Did you live there?

Doug

Thank you, Doug,

I lived in Los Angeles, so those hills look quite familiar.

Guess it's my turn to find a picture.

Till soon.
