Michael Hiles Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4882 Posted August 4, 2010 Augustine of Hippo? Somewhere in North Africa then?------------ Frans No, not Africa, Frans. Closer to your neighbourhood.

Michael Hiles Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4884 Posted August 4, 2010 The Ark of St. Augustine at Basilica di San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, Pavia, Italy No, go west. Some might argue, not Europe. But that's a technicality, IMHO.
Michael Hiles Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4885 Posted August 4, 2010 This is an interesting thread but I thought it was about places not objects. The challenge is to identify a building in a city in the far west of Europe with an strong association with St Augustine (not Augustine of Hippo). This picture is from the cellar (but that is not the main issue). Hopefully that is not too far from the spirit of the thread. If there is an issue please speak up. Michael Hiles Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4889 Posted August 4, 2010 (edited) The cellar of the Cathedral then. Precisely. This is the capitol of a column holding up the cathedral. I have a similar picture of graffitti carved into a column dated 1729. This St. Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Historic, at least, becasue St Thomas à Becket was murdered just upstairs. I once attended Evensong in one of the chapels in the crypt - the resonating voices of the choir was able to vibrate the windows. Truly memorable. Dirk - we`re waiting with baited eyes.. Dirk Van der Herten Posted August 4, 2010 Share #4890 Posted August 4, 2010 Thank you, Michael, for the interesting photograph and assignment. Not everyday do I have the occasion to consult the Catholic Encyclopeadia. This time we stay under the open sky, we're looking for the name of a mountain (sorry, a non-Leica shot from the old shoebox). Welcome, dear visitor!
