Dirk Van der Herten Posted February 23, 2018 Share #17572 Posted February 23, 2018 Thank you. I noticed some very nice underwater photos on your website. Is São Vicente an interesting place to dive? I'll post the next photo later in the evening.
pgk Posted February 23, 2018 Share #17573 Posted February 23, 2018 (edited) Is São Vicente an interesting place to dive? Thanks. Sadly I was only there for a short time and could not dive. Cousteau did in the 1950s I think though and found it fascinating. Edited February 23, 2018 by pgk
Dirk Van der Herten Posted February 23, 2018 Share #17574 Posted February 23, 2018 This time we're looking for the name of an archaeological site. Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted February 23, 2018 Share #17575 Posted February 23, 2018 Dirk - Generally the best diving is on the eastern side of islands and continents. The Indian Ocean, around many places in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysian Borneo's minor islands, and the impossible to get to outer islands of the Seychelles are among the best we've been to. Might this theater be in Turkey?
Dirk Van der Herten Posted February 23, 2018 Share #17576 Posted February 23, 2018 Thanks, Stuart, we're about 800 km. away from Istanbul, but it's not Turkey.
war Posted February 24, 2018 Share #17577 Posted February 24, 2018 That would put us in Greece. This would be the famous ruin of the Greek Theater in Dodoni.
Dirk Van der Herten Posted February 24, 2018 Share #17578 Posted February 24, 2018 You found it again, with only one hint, impressive. For those interested in Ancient Greece Dodona is a fascinating place to visit. It used to be famous for its oracle, older than the one in Delphi. The earliest mention of the site is in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. It was here that Ulysses wanted the oracle's advice whether he should return to Ithaca openly, or in secret. He had good reason for asking the question, fearing to be murdered by his wife Penelope's suitors who wanted to take his place on the throne of Ithaca. Originally the sanctuary was outdoors, near a sacred oak where people came to ask their questions to the oracle. Homer mentions the priests of the oracle (“selloi”) never washed their feet, apparently a strong nose was required to consult the oracle. There is an interesting archaeological museum in the nearby town of Ioannina where a collection of lead tablets is exhibited, on which the questions to the oracle were written and the selloi then wrote the answer on the backside of the tablet. Today a young oak tree still stands where the oracle tree used to be. A villager told me the tree is a descendant of the ancient one, people continued to plant a shoot of the old one. Underneath the tree is a stone recipient in which local people remarkably enough still come to offer coins. Welcome, dear visitor!
