Orient XI Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11841 Posted April 10, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The "U" in the centre suggests U-bahn. Are we in Germany?
Advertisement Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hi Orient XI, Take a look here "Do you know the world ?" -- Competition --. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
doubice Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11842 Posted April 10, 2013 The photo was taken at 8:40am local time, close to a Metro (Subway, U-Bahn etc.)..... That is the extent of my guessing abilities. Cheers, Jan
A miller Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11843 Posted April 10, 2013 Orient/Jan - You are both right! We are in fact in Germany on a cold a snowy morning. 8:40am sounds about right (I wouldn't dare question the accuracy of a German-made street clock!), as I took this picture from my hotel room. Do we need to go further and pinpoint a city, or are we good? Stuart - Perhaps you could advise?
otto.f Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11844 Posted April 10, 2013 This is good enough for me. Sorry but this kind of images can be made in any German suburb-city, that are of no relevance for 'knowing the world' in any significant manner. This reminds me of the title of a famous game: Trivial Pursuit. Just like Lars' picture of a highroad along the Cote d'Azur that was posted recently btw. Unless of course it is some place near Solms or Wetzlar of course
A miller Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11845 Posted April 10, 2013 Fair enough. Although it conceivably could be anywhere in Germany, anyone who has driven through the main streets of Frankfurt should pretty well recognize this. It was taken outside of my room at the Hessischer Hof hotel, which btw is quite charming, indeed.
LeicaBraz Posted April 11, 2013 Share #11846 Posted April 11, 2013 Maybe then Orient XI could post a new photograph?
Orient XI Posted April 11, 2013 Share #11847 Posted April 11, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having been "volunteered" by LeicaBraz, how about this one? The men look bored because they have been holding the globes for nearly a century. Welcome, dear visitor! otto.f Posted April 11, 2013 Share #11848 Posted April 11, 2013 This is not the Empire State Building?
Orient XI Posted April 12, 2013 Share #11849 Posted April 12, 2013 No, it's about 20 years older and on another continent.
stuny Posted April 12, 2013 Share #11850 Posted April 12, 2013 The Empire State building was completed in about 1931. remarkably it only took 14 months to build and begin moving people in. These days it seems to take several years to repair a short road. The Empire State Building is also purely classic art deco.

vertekijker Posted April 13, 2013 Share #11854 Posted April 13, 2013 I seem to recall having seen those in Helsinki. Is that possible? The train station I think. If memory serves me right... I was there in 1976 or so... ---------------
Orient XI Posted April 14, 2013 Share #11855 Posted April 14, 2013 Quite correct Vertekijker! The station frontage is shown in the attached photo. I can see why an earlier competitor thought "USA" as Eilel Saarinen, the architect, went on to design several important buildings there. Congratulations and over to you! Welcome, dear visitor! vertekijker Posted April 14, 2013 Share #11857 Posted April 14, 2013 In this house one of the most important political figures in 20th century European history was born. Where are we? otto.f Posted April 14, 2013 Share #11858 Posted April 14, 2013 (edited) Given the Maria and the traffic sign I would say France; so: Charles de Gaulle? It's in Lille Edited April 14, 2013 by otto.f
vertekijker Posted April 14, 2013 Share #11859 Posted April 14, 2013 Wow! I thought this was a hard one! Maybe you visited this place at some time in the past? I had thought that this one would take some time... Well done, Otto! Your turn. ----------- Frans
otto.f Posted April 14, 2013 Share #11860 Posted April 14, 2013 Thank you! I was in Lille once but not there. It was the color in which the house in the back was painted that brought me to France, plus what I said earlier. Your hint did the rest and checking at Google for De Gaulles place of birth gave the confirmation. I will go upstairs after the news and post a difficult one
