stuny Posted September 6, 2012 Share #10663 Posted September 6, 2012 French Polynesia?
Phil U Posted September 6, 2012 Share #10664 Posted September 6, 2012 No, not French Polynesia. I can tell you that you are in the right hemisphere because the country we are in is in both hemispheres!
Michael Geschlecht Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10665 Posted September 7, 2012 Hello Phil, Might that possibly mean we are in Indonesia which is in both the Northern & Southern Hemispheres? Best Regards, Michael
Phil U Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10666 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) Michael, that is correct. We are somewhere within Indonesia and I can tell you that we are in the Southern Hemisphere part of Indonesia, which doesn't narrow it down too much. stuny Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10667 Posted September 7, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, it does span fewer time zones than Canada, so how difficult can it be? Let's start with Sulawesi.
Phil U Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10668 Posted September 7, 2012 Not Sulawesi. So that's one down and only 900 or so inhabited islands left to choose from!! Sulawesi is well off the "beaten path" compared to where we are in this photo. In fact, this Island, whilst relatively small, is a very beaten path - as far as Westerners visiting Indonesia is concerned.
stuny Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10669 Posted September 7, 2012 that suggests a bit south of Sulawesi - Bali.
Phil U Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10670 Posted September 7, 2012 Bali is correct! But I was hoping for the actual place within Bali. Any ideas? This is a quite famous view as far as the specific location is concerned. If you visited at the right time you may hear an unusual sound and see the flickering of flames.... 'cak cak cak cak cak cak' (the c is pronounced 'ch' of course)....but keep tight hold of your belongings because there is a gang of little thieves who live here! stuny Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10671 Posted September 7, 2012 Phil - Good hint since that sound is chanted in a dance telling the story of the Ramayana, which we've seen presented many places in Asia; but I think the Balinese location was Batubulan. Phil U Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10672 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) The story of Ramayana is correct and they tell the stories through dance in various places on Bali. In this instance we are not in Batubulan though - we are South of Denpasa where there is located one of nine kayangan jagat (directional temples) that protect Bali from evil spirits. This temple has a troop of sacred macaques (the gang of little thieves!) and here they do a fire dance to tell one of the stories from the Ramayana - in this story the Vanara monkey men help Prince Rama to regain Sita from, and ultimately defeat, the nasty King Ravanan. stuny Posted September 7, 2012 Share #10673 Posted September 7, 2012 I've been there with the gang of little thieves, but I can't recall where in Bali that is.
Phil U Posted September 9, 2012 Share #10674 Posted September 9, 2012 Ok, it's gone a bit quiet so in the interest of keeping the thread alive (and not being too pedantic!) I will reveal the exact location and pass the baton to Stuart as he guessed the correct Island and identified the dance. The exact location from where the photograph was taken is the Temple at Uluwatu on the South West corner of the Bukit Peninsular of Bali. This is one of the locations where you can see the Kecak fire dance - and very enjoyable it is too! Over to you Stuart
