This is a communist mural on the wall of a governmental building, showing the happiness of the people under communism. The mural is silhouetted by a memorial of the people who where killed by the communist government in the uprising in East Berlin on 17th June, 1953.

That's right Adli. It is on Wilhelmstr off Unter den Linden in what was East Berlin. I like how it covers the different eras. The building was built in the 1930's as the Reichs Air Ministry. It was the biggest office building in Europe at the time and was designed to be bomb proof. It worked and at the end of the war it was one of the few buildings still standing in Berlin. The declaration of the creation of East Germany (DDR) was made here and it continued as an East German Ministry. The workers, who felt oppressed under Communism, demonstrated here in 1953 and some were executed. They are shown in the photographs in the pool. The government at the time created the mural to show how happy people were under the regime. The building now has anew life as the German Finance Ministry.

Your turn Adli - good luck in choosing a subject. Bob

Thank you so much LucBob! I'm leaving in the morning for Berlin with my kids - this is the kind of thing we want to visit!

Have a nice trip Frans. We love it there and usually visit at least once a year. stand on Wilhelmstr and you are standing at the centre of where so much happened and yet today it is a more or less bland city street.

We have a favourite guide Matthias Rau and he specialises in the DDR. He is far from being a flippant guide and only speaks German but what a view Stadtf
