esquire53 Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6862 Posted January 27, 2011 As noted above - not in Scandinavia, hence not in Finland. Having lived in Norway fo a while.... Finland is not part of Scandinavia. Scandinavia is Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The "Nordic" countries include Finland and Iceland. Cheers
doubice Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6863 Posted January 27, 2011 Having lived in Norway fo a while....Finland is not part of Scandinavia. Scandinavia is Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The "Nordic" countries include Finland and Iceland. Cheers Thanks for the clarification! I was aware of the differences in the languages - Ugro-Finnic vs. Germanic but, always considered Finland as part of Scandinavia. If my geography teacher was still alive, I'd give him an 'F' (or a '5' which stood for 'failed' when and where I went to school...) But: List of Scandinavian Countries | Scandinavian Capitals | Ranker - A World of Lists and Scandinavia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and Official Site of Scandinavian Tourist Boards of North America - Scandinavian Tourist Boards - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden Now where is that statue....... Mauribix Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6865 Posted January 27, 2011 I don't think that I would include Spain among one of Europe's landlocked countries..... Switzerland it is. Best, jan That's why I thought of Como (Italy) at first (there's a lake in the background as well). Well, then I'd say Lugano.
doubice Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6866 Posted January 27, 2011 Thanks for improving my english vocabulary..... It is often us, whose mother tongue is other than English, who had to study twice as hard to become somewhat proficient in that relatively simple language..... doubice Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6867 Posted January 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's why I thought of Como (Italy) at first (there's a lake in the background as well).Well, then I'd say Lugano. Time for hints.... The body of water in the background is not a lake. The city has rather close ties to a certain member of the animal kingdom.... Good luck, Jan

pop Posted January 27, 2011 Share #6869 Posted January 27, 2011 Basle? I think the animal in question would not be a basilisk but rather some kind of mammal, usually brown. I won't say any more. I've run out of pictures to show here.

doubice Posted January 28, 2011 Share #6871 Posted January 28, 2011 OK... common guys and gals - what is..... ...some kind of mammal, usually brown? You get the mammal and you have the town! Or - the other way round? Jan
geaibleu Posted January 28, 2011 Share #6872 Posted January 28, 2011 From your hints I would guess, bears and hence Bern yet what makes me wonder is that normally the Swiss are very respectful of their parks and monuments, and further that the style of the statue fits more with, how can I say it without offending anyone, a stalinist country. doubice Posted January 28, 2011 Share #6873 Posted January 28, 2011 Bern it is! Photo was taken probably 20 years ago for exactly the reason you mention - very un-Swiss to leave a statue in this shape..... As to the style being more fitting for a Stalinist country - nah... Stalinist statues were much more cheerful and grandiose, to represent the "happines" of the citizenry. The park is directly under the famous Bärengraben, along the bank of the Aare river. Go ahead, your turn. Thanks, Jan
geaibleu Posted January 28, 2011 Share #6874 Posted January 28, 2011 Thank you Jan. Here is the next one with 2 simple questions: Age and location of the building. Original image is a Kodachrome slide taken some 40 years ago under cloudy skies. Colour is reasonably accurate. Welcome, dear visitor! Olsen Posted January 29, 2011 Share #6875 Posted January 29, 2011 Well. It is not a run down industrial estate outside Detroit. But from somewhere else. Greece? Or Turkey?

Olsen Posted January 29, 2011 Share #6877 Posted January 29, 2011 You are in the right direction, right cultural heritage. Well, the Greek architect culture spread around somewhat. Even to Capitol Hill. Do we find this building in Greece or Turkey? Or somewhere else?
