GCHA Posted January 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) FYI. I have just begun a new web gallery with many D Lux 4 images. the other photographs were done with a Kodak DCS14n and scans from 4X5 negs, The D Lux 4 is a fantastic camera, and is quickly becoming my main photographic tool. I hope some of you will have the time or interest to visit the gallery. Any comments and criticisms would be appreciated. Please enjoy the images at: Zenfolio | G.C. Harper Images Thanks again, Gary

Peter Duminy Posted January 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 28, 2009 Thank you for sharing your photo site with us Gary. Your photos look superb. I especially like the Blue Grille, Tree Trunk and Leaves, and Chain Gear Wheel. I have found the D-Lux 4's Macro capabilities to be fantastic. Congratulations on your excellent website. GCHA Posted January 28, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted January 28, 2009 Thanks for your comments. I am primarily attracted to B&W imaging, but for the first time in a long time the D Lux 4 has inspired me to do more color work. I hope to post more images on the Zenfolio site soon, and change them out on a regular basis, to keep it looking fresh. I am not so interested in commerce on the site, more for the sharing of images! Thanks again Gary

I also love B&W and am expecting my DLux 4 in a couple of days. Your photos are making me more anxious to recieve it and put it to work!
GCHA Posted February 28, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted February 28, 2009 Hello picturelady, Thanks for viewing my gallery and for your very nice comments. I am sure you are going to love your D Lux 4. I cannot believe the quality and sharpness of the images. It is more than a P&S camera for me. I now use it as my MAIN camera. Somewhat limited in telephoto, but I can use the DCS Pro 14n, for those images. So good luck and have fun with your new friend.

toddbee Posted April 10, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 10, 2009 wow great gallery. how do the prints from the dlux4 compare to the 14n. i had a 14n a while back and really liked it.
GCHA Posted April 10, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted April 10, 2009 Thanks toddbee. I usually print to an image size of 10"X15", and the quality of the D Lux 4 image very closely approaches that of the DCS14n. In some image cases it surpasses. When I first started shooting with te D Lux 4, I went back and photographed some of the things that I shot with the DCS14n, so I have really been able to compare the images. You might notice some similar imagery on the gallery between the two cameras. I generally use the base iso with either camera for most of my work, but the Leica is much better at higher iso's. The DCS prints are very smooth and creamy, where the D Lux 4 prints have bite and contrast. I think I like the DCS for portraits, and long lens stuff, and the leica for closeups, landscape, and detailed Wide Angle shots. As I continue to use the D Lux 4, I am even more suprised with the images. I have a gallery show coming up this month and about 80 percent of the images come from the D Lux 4! toddbee Posted April 11, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 11, 2009 GCHA, Thats awesome. Do you shoot raw in the dlux? i have been trying to, but the dynamic BW Jpeg is hard to give up. would love to see some of your prints if avail to view online. thanks, t
GCHA Posted April 11, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted April 11, 2009 toddbee, I shoot mostly RAW, I however have used the JPEG Pinhole effect. I think it works well. I was impressed. The prints look very similar to the Zenfolio images, at least on my monitor. (The monitor has just a bit more contrast and snap) The only difference being a slight selenium tone to the B&Ws'. GCHA Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted April 15, 2009 Thanks Bo again, and mishima for your comments. I am enjoying showing the images and recieving comments. I have gotten some very nice and supportive comments from many members of this forum, and I do appreciate them very much. In some ways better than selling my work. Especially since most of the viewers are fellow photographers. Reminds me of the old days, when photographers really hung out and supported their fellow photographers. Nice to see this trend, rather than being Doggedly competitive and untouchable all the time.
sm23221 Posted April 15, 2009 Share #15 Posted April 15, 2009 At first I thought....ok I'll click and look at another boring gallery. Yours is absolutely not boring. You have some real nice well-executed bw images, some of which looks like it should be in a gallery on display! You certainly know what you are doing with your camera...bring on some more! I really enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing them and making them available.
GCHA Posted April 15, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted April 15, 2009 Great Gallery Michael. Nice color. I wish that I could do better color, but somehow I can only SEE in B&W, for some reason. What camera or cameras do yoy use? I could not figure out how to activate the photo info on your site. Thanks again for your comments, and am glad that you had a look. Arie Intveld Posted April 20, 2009 Share #17 Posted April 20, 2009 Gary, I've just had several runs through your gallery on Zenfolio .. your work is simply EXEMPLARY! What a gifted eye you have! I think Leica Camera AG should be begging you to submit your images to Leica Fotografie International (LFI). Your work with the D-Lux 4 showcases what this little wonder is capable of in the right hands. Ever consider working with the M8? BTW, how do you like Zenfolio? I'm currently on SmugMug and I'm considering making the switch to Zenfolio. Is it relatively straightforward to customize the gallery pages? Again Gary, FABULOUS work .. I look forward to seeing more.
nunnzzzz Posted April 20, 2009 Share #18 Posted April 20, 2009 Hello GCHA - I noticed that you shoot a lot of Raw on your DLux4. Can you let me know what software you use to process your Raw?
elgenper Posted April 20, 2009 Share #19 Posted April 20, 2009 Stunning album...only thing to do is look at the images with admiration and awe! After such an experience, it feels a bit out of place to ask a technical question, but.... You seem to use the Dlux 4 almost like a view camera, capturing exquisitely composed, perfect images of static subjects. Do you use any kind of camera support, or are these handheld? GCHA Posted April 20, 2009 Author Share #20 Posted April 20, 2009 Arie, Thanks for your comments and thank you very much for the Guest Entry on my Zenfolio site. I am not a computer expert an Zenfolio gives me an easy place to show my work. Although you do have the ability to customize the interface to some extent, I just picked a stock format that I liked and would show the images well. Even there, I was able to customize the page. In the past I have owned a Leica IIIg and am M3. I do not think at this time that the M8 would serve me. I like Close Up and Long Lens shots, and do not do people (although that might change), or street photography. Also, being retired now, such a financial expenditure on another system would be hard to justify. nunnzzzz, I use C1 for my RAW conversion and Picture Window Pro 3.5 as my edit software. I sometimes do B&W conversion in C1, when I do not need to use PWP, other times when I can not make the desired adjustments in C1, I do them in PWP. elgenper, Thanks for your comments as well. I do not have a viewfinder for the camera as yet, so I generally use it on a tripod, with cable release. Non of the images on Zenfolio were handheld, all supported. I have a Hoodman Loupe unit that I use to view the LCD. The resulting magnified image is just like using a view camera, except the image is reversed and right side up. Works great for me.
