Too bad they don't rank them as to speed. 1 GB SD cards are so inexpensive now, I think I'll just pick one up at a local store and wait untill Rob Galbraith puts the winners un his database:

Rob Galbraith DPI: CF/SD Performance Database

There might not be enough interest fo Galbraith to do the testing, but eventually someone will.

Interesting -- nothing bigger than 2GB.

Take another look - there's a couple of 4Gb - hana and extrememory.

I think 2Gb is plenty to spread the risk of a bad card but worth paying the extra for higher speed. I'm sure we'll have some benchmarking here...

I'm sitting on 10 2gb Transcend 150x cards . Not even a mention for them. Hmmm

Been here before:D

Guy, have you found a ruggedized holder for your SD cards similar to the one Gepe makes for CFs. I like that design and, by the way, prefer smaller but more cards on a shoot as I'm a firm believer in not putting all my image eggs in one basket card. Guess I'll search to see if Gepe makes one for SD and order it now if they do.

Paranoia rules!

Guy I have the same card holder. Very functional.

NewEgg has an SDHC 4GB A-Data card that a customer reviewer is using with a Panasonic FX50. This looks hopeful as the FX50 is a newer camera using SDHC standards. Though A-Data has not had a good track record in the past.

The problem seems there are no card readers out there to support the new SDHC cards. Here is a test review for the new Sandisk CF Firewire reader and at the bottom the combo SD/MS/CF USB2.0 card reader. Why they do not make a combo SD/CF Firewire card reader is a shame. The speed on the Firewire reader is really outstanding. The USB 2.0 reader looks faster than other USB readers but I do not see any information suggesting it supports SDHC cards either.

I just bought a 4 gig Ridata 150X card, with anticipation of using it with the M8 (along with an older 2 Gig 150X Ridata). Nowhere does it say SDHC. I just assumed when Leica said cards up to 4 Gig would work, that they meant all 4 gig cards. I checked the down load file with compatible SD cards, and there are only several 4 Gig cards. Ridata is NOT listed. Keep your fingers crossed. Does anyone know if the "SDHC" cards will be compatible with the existing card readers we have? I must confess, I don't know what "SDHC" means. Anyone help?

Thanks

Dave

Some how I think this list is just what Leica has tested so far. Most of the cards sold globally are made by a handful of manifacturers and rebranded to "Acme storage solutions" or whatever. I have a 2gb Crucial card that isn't on the list. I don't beleive there will be any problems with it in an M8 as it works in every SD device I own. That part of the M8 has been made by someone outside of Solms - most likely Matsusita (Panasonic).

Carl,

Agree with you. It's very likely this list was put together some time ago. The fact that Leica has not updated this PDF to add reference to recent SDHC cards is puzzling. I hope that Leica will eventually include the SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 4GB card in their list.

Meanwhile, here is a link to the hama High Speed 4GB SD card.

If you ever consider buying an SDHC card (see http://www.sdcard.org/sdhc/index.html), remember that the card must ALWAYS carry this logo on it:

We're talking about the same Leica right. The company that has been the preeminent rangefinder manufacterer that stuck to manual everything cameras and only within the last few years started to embrace the inevitability of digital.

I'm not the least surprised that a silly SD card list isn't up to date. Why are people stressing about this? Do people honestly believe that Leica is going to sell a $5000 camera and not have SD memory that works with the M8? SDHC...who cares. Leica got through Photokina with rave reviews from just about everyone that touched the M8 and there wasn't an SDHC card in sight.

I hope they are focusing their time and attention on tweaking the firmware to the best that they can get it within the promised release timeframe (which is probably what they are doing). If there are still some loose ends then who cares. Which company doesn't release beta products these days? I trust that whatever needs to be addressed will be addressed via firmware or whatever else needs to be done. Leica has never left us out in the cold and I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

I can understand the anticipation and anxiousness, but this is a really silly thing to be worrying about.

Well when you have 10 2gb cards at let's say 1000 dolars in value . There always will be , i hope it works because us DMR owners have cards that don't work. We have been here before. I am not going to stress about it but I certainly don't want to put out another 1000 dollars replacing them either. Which i have done before.

I would not assume anything, especially with changing technology. For example the Nikon D1 series through the updated versions of the D1x (sold until last year) can only take CF cards up to 2GB.

'Only' ..... think about it for a second. It used to be only 36 exposures. So unless your files are 55MB each or your card is real low capacity, you're going to get a lot more onto a card than you did a roll. The only problem I see is the one a shooter will have when a 4Gb card dies. I had a 256MB card die on me a coupple of years ago it was full of wedding shots taken with my D2. Not a pleasent experience even if I was able to recover most of the files. I'll never buy anything from TwinMOS again. Thats not to say that a Sandisk, Panasonic or Lexar card can't fail too, it's just that I don't trust TwinMOS (regardless of who made the actual chip).

Hatch your bets gentlemen and use more than one card, data loss will happen.

The D1X is how old? Circa 2001 perhaps? Leica is resistant to change but comparing the brand new M8 to the nearly six year old D1X is a little extreme.

Yes, the possibility is there for incompatibilities but I think Leica will come through in the end for us.
