wide.angle Posted October 19, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted October 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) When focusing an M6, the patch image is very slightly below the main image. Is this sign of an alignment problem or otherwise?
Advertisement Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Hi wide.angle, Take a look here M6 Viewfinder patch image. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted October 19, 2006 Share #2 Â Posted October 19, 2006 It's not normal but doesn't necessarily mean that the finder will be inaccurate (but I could see how it will hamper focussing with some subjects). Personally, I would send it in to be readjusted. If the M6 hasn't been serviced in recent years you may as well send it in for a full CLA.
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 19, 2006 Share #3 Â Posted October 19, 2006 I had this problem and had the RF section realigned. Â It's a car payment.
cbretteville Posted October 19, 2006 Share #4 Â Posted October 19, 2006 I had this on an M4-P it was focusing acuratly, but the misalignment was a constant annoyance so I had it fixed. No regrets. Â - Carl
danmitch Posted October 19, 2006 Share #5 Â Posted October 19, 2006 I had the same problem with my M6, again it focussed correctly though. I took mine into Leica in Milton Keynes who carried out the adjustment very quickly while I waited - not sure where you are located but if you are in the UK definately worth a call. wide.angle Posted October 19, 2006 Author Share #6 Â Posted October 19, 2006 Thanks all for the quick info, ... this was actually an M6 i planned to buy, but sounds like this is definitely going to add to the cost of the purchase, so I'll pass on this one and keep looking. wparsonsgisnet Posted October 20, 2006 Share #7 Â Posted October 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good call. The alignment is a big-ticket item.
danmitch Posted October 20, 2006 Share #8 Â Posted October 20, 2006 Surprised to hear that Bill - Leica didn't even charge me for the adjustment!
stunsworth Posted October 20, 2006 Share #9 Â Posted October 20, 2006 I thought vertical alignment adjustment was pretty simple if you had the correct tool.
wide.angle Posted October 21, 2006 Author Share #10 Â Posted October 21, 2006 Steve, do you (or others) perform some of their own maintenance? If so, are adjustments straight forward or can one (pardon me) screw it up? Â I've got my eyes on an MP now if the seller will work with me on a trade (he trades in his business). doubice Posted October 21, 2006 Share #11 Â Posted October 21, 2006 The vertical alignment is actually a very simple procedure, the trick is getting to the adjustment screw. On all M's except the ones with red dot between the rangefinder windows: remove the small screw next to the frosted finder window - this will expose a small adjustment screw inside the body. Â By turning this adjustment screw you can 'move' the RF image vertically, until both images coincide. Use only light pressure on the screwdriver; just enough to turn the screw. Â Bodies with the red Leitz or Leica dot are a little trickier, as the dot has to be removed to access the adjustment. The dot is glued on and can be damaged in the process however, replacements ara available from Leica. Â The whole procedure should not take more than 10 minutes. Â All the best, Â Jan
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 22, 2006 Share #12 Â Posted October 22, 2006 Dan, Mine was $300 and change. I guess that's called not in warranty.
doubice Posted October 23, 2006 Share #13 Â Posted October 23, 2006 Dan, Mine was $300 and change. I guess that's called not in warranty. Â Bill, Â Surely the $300.00 must have included other work as well, or parts replacements. If you indeed paid that for just the vertical alignment and nothing else, I would complain bitterly....... The top plate of the camera does not even have to come off for this. Â I am not a trained Leica technician (actually far from it, more of a "self-taught tinkerer") and have never spent more than 30 minutes on the vertical alignment. wparsonsgisnet Posted October 23, 2006 Share #14 Â Posted October 23, 2006 Jan, they did a CLA as well, but it wan't necessary at the time. Â So, nice guys, but it wasn't cheap.
