Hi John,

Thanks. The CV test lenses are supposed to be here very soon but I'll let you know if they're delayed. Thanks for the generosity.

Cheers,

Sean

Sean,

Please check out the 21mm as to the necessity of using an accessory viewfinder. We debated privately as to whether only a smidgen (a term of art) of the scene would get clipped at the four edges of the image in the built-in rangefinder window. If so, some of us would gladly sacrifice full and complete information on the left-out smidgen in favor of not having to graft an ugly obtrusive viewfinder attachment onto our lovely svelte and unobstrusive Leica M8s.

I'm thinking about how I might do that. Much will depend on what samples are already available when I publish.

Cheers,

Sean

Are you talking technically -- in regards to your website -- or stylistically in the context of your review? If it's a technical problem I'm sure we can all scratch our collective head and come up with a solution.

Technically... I've asked my developer to scratch his head but thanks very much for the offer to help.

Cheers,

Sean,

Please check out the 21mm as to the necessity of using an accessory viewfinder.

(snip)

FWIW, I made a CAD drawing of the (theoretical) framelines from 21 through 90mm and overlaid it on a picture of the 24/35mm framelines purloined from one of the review sites. My impression is that the vertical dimension is almost exactly right - the viewfinder exceeds the height required by about the width of a frameline. In the horizontal direction, the viewfinder is a tad narrower than it "ought" to be, by two to three frameline widths at each side.

Mark,

Sort of....there's a limited number of lenses in the press pool and so we (reviewers) have to schedule them. I'll have these lenses for a period of time and send each one back when I'm done with testing, examples, etc. As the lenses I'm waiting for become available, they will be sent to me. It's not exactly like the Netflix of the reviewing world but the manufacturers try to keep things circulating as needed by the press and they try to be fair. I must say that Leica is absolutely one of the best manufacturers to work with in terms of their speed and willingness to get the needed items to me for review.

Cheers,

Sean

Hi Guy,

If I hadn't worked with the pre-production versions that might be true. I'm interested to see the results of the firmware changes.

Cheers,

Hi Sean

I've finally got over my radical objections to PayPal and joined your review site. It won't make any difference to my buying decision (already ordered) but it sure will provide some entertainment during the long wait ahead!

kind regards

Hi Jono,

Cool, I hope you enjoy it.

Can't imagine what possible objections you have to PayPal. My only objection is that it allows me to buy Leica lenses rather too easily...

I had PayPal ask me for a bank account number so that they could "deposit two small amounts" into my bank account for some kind of "verification". I'm not about to give anyone electronic access to my account and so I am very reluctant to do any business via PayPal.

Mark,

The problem with them is that after you spend $10,000 with Paypal, they require you to become “verified” to use them in the future. To become verified you must give them your bank account, which in my opinion is absolute insanity. So now I simple go to the bank and get a cashiers check for those rare instances where a company does not take credit cards.

Guess it depends on the banking system but here in the UK, we are very used to giving our bank details to organisations for electronic debits, to the extent that I write less than 10 cheques/checks a year. I do lots of stuff through PayPal and have never had one hint of a problem.

A story in the Wall Street Journal some time back said that PayPal is changing some of its policies about bank information due to pressure from customers. Not only were their requests annoying, but for a while, there were lots of scam artists sending out nice reproductions of PayPal pages asking for "updates" on your credit card and bank information. All I do through PayPal now is provide credit card numbers through what they call a secure site (which I certainly hope it is) and I use a credit card that promises to withhold payment on any internet scams...

We do need a good unified micropayment system, and PayPal could be it if it doesn't grow TOO rapacious...

John the trick with paypal and with e-bay is ignore all e-mails that come in to you. If there is something important that needs to be done with either one on of them than you will be asked when you log in. But yes i do get e-mails from both and i simply delete them
