WW,

Is there a reason that you got a 46mm UVA rather than UV/IR?

Pete.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for asking.

I called the shop after reading your message and the sales person in charged asked me if I wanted to get the UV/IR??? hehehe,

Well... Can you share the differences between those 2 if you don't mind???.

Cheers,

WW

Congrat wininhar.

I took it out yesterday for some pitch side rugby shots, banged and scratched my uv/ir filter pretty well but it's a nice experience.

WoW... you are fast......!!!

I am ready to go and practice it, Hehehehe

WW,

It sounds like you missed the furore that erupted shortly after the release of the M8 when it was discovered that the sensor is covered by a very thin infrared filter. The thin filter was necessary because of the limited distance between the backs of lenses and the sensor in digital rangefinder cameras.

All digital cameras have an IR filter over the sensor that blocks infrared light from reaching the sensor and producing unusual effects but the thin IR filter on the M8 only blocks a small amount of the infrared so it is advisable to use an external filter, the UV/IR filter that I mentioned, on the front of the lens.

If an external IR filter isn't used the pictures from the M8 are likely to experience colour shift: black synthetic fabrics often take on a magenta hue and green foliage can look yellowish. If you only shoot black and white then you may be able to get away without the IR filter.

Purchase of a new M* normally entitles the purchaser to 2 free UV/IR filters of their choice but you have to register with Leica who will send them directly to you. I think that your dealer should have told you this and explained that a UVA filter wouldn't be particularly useful on an M8.

The UVA filter is a filter that many photographers use to physically protect the front elements of their lens but it also blocks ultraviolet rays that can produce low contrast in images made at higher altitudes for example. The Leica UV/IR filters perform this function as well.

Hope this helps and you can find more helpful information in the Leica Wiki M8 FAQ here.

Be very careful with that particular slingbag. As it's a side access bag, make sure it's properly zipped. Otherwise you may find your new camera laying on the street. I used that bag for a few days and give up on it. Too much of a risk for me. Good luck.
