Any thoughts about Leica Lens prices, with $300 rebate until Jan. 31, is now the time to buy? will prices drop after that?(highly doubt it) larger rebate? same rebate in a month or in 3 months?

thanks,

Manny

Usually rebates are used to clear inventory. Therefore, now may be a good time to buy. Once excess inventory is consumed, the prices will most likely not be any better than now. As far as same rebate in a month or three months, who knows?

The good time to buy Leica lenses was at least 2 years ago.

I'm glad I bought all mine back then.

Not sure if I could justify the cost today. Looking at the price and the economy.

Amen brother. I bought my lens years ago. To buy now is a big leap. Leo

Hi Manny,

I'm in much the boat as you. I'm currently looking at buying a 50 mm Cron and have also been watching the prices. For me the decision is even harder as our local currency is currently trading at roughly 10 Namibian Dollars to 1 US Dollar. Imagine you guys had to spend 15K for a lens...

Personally I think the prices might rise after 31 January, but are likely to come down towards mid year. There is no sign of the financial crises going away in the short term (probably only start noticing changes by mid 2010). So most companies, including Leica, are going to have to drop prices to keep some sort of turnover going. This might be in the form of rebates, specials or trade in's.

I am not absolutely certain that this is the way that things are going, but I do see a lot of signs to point in this direction - at least in terms of the time frame. Currently there are no Diamonds being mined in Southern Africa - De Beers has shut down operations (predictions are that the price will drop another 30% this year due to low demand). Our Copper industry has shut down indefinitely. Uranium has reduced production by 80% and several new Platinum mines have been shelved.

Mining companies do not make these kinds of decisions if the problem was seen as short term. They are all expecting this to carry on until sometime 2011. This means that the consumer market will be in much the same position. Thus the prices of Leica equipment should follow suit. All companies rely on turnover to survive...

Andreas

PS: I just checked the price of a new M8 this week in South Africa - ZAR 86,780 - Imagine you guys had to pay 90K for a second body. This is absolutely crazy - the price has increased by 300% in two years... The Rand as a currency has only dropped 30% in that time - so someone is making a fortune!

thanks for your thoughts, I guess the way things are going with the economy it's not going to get any better for a while. A new Leica lens is a luxury but it would be a good way to help out the economy :D (by putting some money into it) so it might be a good time.

thanks again

Manny

I just looked at the auction site and was shocked at the number of Noctiluxes up for sale. None particularly cheap but last time I looked (about six months) there were very few. Same with 28mm Cron. Most are "buy it now" priced but still a lot of lenses on the market. It would appear that they're getting dumped - I just wonder if anybody's buying. Again, the prices are not cheap so I'm not sure I'm seeing THAT but still I wonder. I bought my Nocti v2 about two years ago for US$1800 which was a good price then but was not really anything I could afford. It came with caps and a bunch of E60 filters so it was okay.
