Guest g12 Posted January 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just picked up a very very sweet Leica CL with Summicron-C 40mm f/2.0, and the lens is confusing me slightly.... It has 14 distinct positions for the aperture ring... what's going on? Is this standard? It would mean that either a) I have a half stop (or a 'bug' stop ) smaller than f/16 or I have a half stop wider than f/2. The final 'click' corresponds to the '16' marker, so I'm thinking it must be the former... do I have a Summicron-C 40mm f/1.x on my hands? I've taken a few shots wide open and it looks fine, tack sharp... curious.

MattLain Posted January 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2009 aren't the supposed click stops from f2-16 only 11 with half stops? does it pass both f2 and f16 either end? obviously this won't indicate a change in aperture size; it will only be f2 if marked as such. Guest g12 Posted January 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted January 15, 2009 The full stops (7 of them) [2-2.8-4-5.6-8-11-16] gives 13 half stops. It looks properly aligned at f/16, makes me think it has an overclick on the f/2 side...
mtsens1 Posted January 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2009 Mine over clicks ever so slightly on the 2.0 and 16 sides, and the extra movement does affect the leafs ever so slightly. Doesn't seem to be a full half stop, but it's something.
apitong Posted January 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2009 Mine over clicks ever so slightly on the 2.0 and 16 sides, and the extra movement does affect the leafs ever so slightly. Doesn't seem to be a full half stop, but it's something. The same with mine, but the position 'below' 2 does not open the lens any furhter. It is the same as f/2 BTW: never noticed this in 15+ years using this lens on my CL.

luigi bertolotti Posted January 19, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is not the only lens with this behavior... the same happens to my 135 2,8 and to an old Summaron 35: I thnink, normal tolerances or wear in the click-stop mechanism... in my items going over the closest stop causes indeed a small further closing of the iris, not at the other end : I never tried to evaluate the effect of "overclosing": when I noticed it, at film times, seemed to me a waste of film, but now that you have arisen this issue... with M8 worths a simple test... epand56 Posted February 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted February 18, 2009 Just noticed it, mine overclicks on the 16 side and looking at the diaphragm it seems to close just a little thiny bit when overclicking.
martha Posted February 19, 2009 Share #9 Posted February 19, 2009 One of the sharpest Leica lenses I ever had the pleasure of driving...loved that little lens....Sadly, I no longer own it and can't remember if it had extra clicks on either side. I just remember it as a pleasure to carry on my M6 and more importantly to use. Thanks for the memories....--m
