Foreigner buying D-lux 4 from UK dealer

Hi. Has anyone here from outside of UK bought a D-lux 4 from a UK dealer (e.g. Robert White)? Reason I ask is there is a free Leica leather case available with the purchase, but you have to send the warranty card to Milton Keynes to claim it. Therefore I just wondered whether someone outside of UK can still benefit from the offer; and even assuming so, would one need a UK shipping address for the physical delivery. Cheers!

You don't have to live or ship the item to the uk to benefit from a uk only leica promotion.I live in the states and just received a pair of binoculars from a uk dealer and still was able to get the uk only promotion of a second pair of binoculars when buying from a uk dealer.just contact the dealer your dealing with and they will have the answers to your question.where in the world are you located?

Hi,

I bought the D-Lux4 in the UK and was situated in Austria at the time. Leica UK sent the case without any hassle to my address in Austria. It did take 5 weeks or so.

I contacted Leica UK prior to purchasing since I had my doubts as well, they confirmed there would be no problems what so ever.

Thank you all for being so quick with your responses. That's good to know.

To be honest, I already bought the camera from Robert White. The GBP exchange rate is so amazing that even _without_ the leather case, their price was a great deal compared to the options I have locally, which is Hong Kong.

I will go ahead and send the warranty card in for the case then. If it does indeed come without hassle that is an added bonus for me.

I do want to say a few good things about Robert White here. When I made the order, I wrote in the comments, "please let me know one way or the other whether you can dispatch this quickly, as I'm buying it as an anniversary gift." I ended up getting the camera in less than three days, and as I was putting away the invoice for safekeeping, I noticed that on it were scribbled the words, "URGENTLY NEEDED." So they were paying attention to me and took good care of me. :) I'm very grateful for that. Thank you guys, if you visit this forum.

Hi. Yes indeed I'm in Hong Kong. I know of 9days, but I have not bought from them before.

I'm not the type that physically go from shop to shop to check prices, so I can't say anything about whether HK$6,500 (i.e. ~US$840), inclusive of the Leica case, is a good deal. I can tell you though that at today's exchange rate, Robert White's price is HK$5,300. That's inclusive of shipping and also with the leather case. It's not even close.

HK$5300  That's even better:D

Anyways, congrats on your new purchased.

I am staying in HK at the moment, so if you know anything good place to shop camera accessories or computer stuff , please let me know too. thanks!

I'll second that. Old fashioned customer service second to none. Congrats on your new camera.

I can point you to some places, though I'm really not the best bargain hunter. If you want some more advice, try visiting the Hong Kong group on Flickr and join the discussion group.

The official Leica dealer that I like in Hong Kong is New Francisco in Tsim Sha Tsui East. Their prices tend to be very reasonable (especially on accessories), they are typically quite well stocked, and I have been happy with the service. As a general rule, I think the cost to the dealer on Leica goods is roughly 70% of the MSRP. Whatever premium is charged above that threshold is the profit margin. So you can check the Hong Kong distributor's official price list in the Download section, and have a rough feel for how you can bargain accordingly.

For cameras and electronics in general, just pasting what I have written before elsewhere:

One centralized place that you can go to is Sai Yeung Choi Street South (西洋菜南街), which has tons of camera shops. Just get off E2 or D3 exit of Mongkok Station of our subway system, and you'll be right in the middle of it.

If you need a map, visit YPMap. On the left pane, click on "Street", then enter "Shantung Street" under "Street Name" and "47" under "House Number". That's the mini-mall where DCFever is located, and there's quite a few shops there for a start. Sai Yeung Choi St. South is just right next door.

As a general rule, expect a discount to the MSRP. In chains such as Citicall (they have many outlets located on SYC St. S.), you should expect cameras to come with free gifts like LCD protector, camera bag, cheapo tripod, and/or possibly a knock-off battery - just ask. In addition, also ask the shop if they have an "imported" version of the camera. The imported version ("water goods, or "Shui For" in Cantonese) is one which is not legitimately for sale in Hong Kong, and therefore not entitled to warranty coverage in Hong Kong, and typically sells for a small discount.

For computer stuff, on Hong Kong Island you can check out the mall outside the A4 exit of Wanchai station (it's right outside, you can't possibly miss it). If you're feeling more adventurous, go to Golden Computer Centre at Sham Shui Po station, D2 exit. Prices should be generally cheaper. Nearby Ap Liu Street also has lots of very cheap electronics and old stuff.

Have fun!
