DMR problem solved

You might recall that I had a problem with my R8/DMR. It wouldn’t power up regardless of which fully charged battery I put in it, not even after reattaching the body and DMR. I sent it off to Leica-NJ with a detailed letter.

The DMR/R8 is on its way back to me, and will arrive at my office Monday or Tuesday. The contacts on the batteries (I have three) had built-up enough oxides that they made intermittent connection, causing the problem. Unlike other electrical contacts (such as phono plugs on the back of your audio gear), there is no wiping action as one inserts or removes the battery, so oxides can build up. The solution is to periodically clean the contacts at least with a pencil eraser, or with a chemical contact cleaner used for high-end audio. I suspect that having had two long holidays in hot, humid, climates that included exposure to ocean air (Papua New Guinea and Borneo, both including a significant amount of time scuba diving as well as inland touring) took its toll on the contacts.

As has always been my experience with Leica-NJ, they were most professional in keeping me apprised of what is happening, and what to do. Thank you Mark and Dave.

Ah well, Stuart, that's what comes of letting your R8/DMR go away on holiday without you! You really should speak to the camera about its penchant for scuba diving too - I hope you don't allow it to get up to such mischief when you're there?!:D

Very glad to hear that it's all sorted now and looking forward to seeing some more of your excellent images in the photo forum and on Barbara and Stu's website.

(OT: I hadn't visited your website for some time but I was pleasantly surprised at the excellent improvements when I did!)

Pete.

Stuart - that's a really helpful hint. My DMR has sat quietly in its cupboard for several weeks whilst its M8 brother has been seeing the light (so to speak). I've just checked it and its OK but I'll certainly follow your advice and clean everything thoroughly before its next outing. Best wishes,

Graeme

Below are images from a sheet that Leica NJ packed with my DMR when they returnesd it to me.

J-Claude - I took some test photos but will not post them. I'll post others before long.

Thanks for the postings on this thread. I had a similar problem. After being out on a trip for 5 months, without my DMR, I returned and started to copy my negatives wtih the R8+DMR. One battery was still working, and I was able to use the camera for about 1/2 day. Then neither battery would work, nor would either recharge. Instead of trying solve the problem, I am going to send the charger and both batteries to Leica in NJ. I want to start with batteries that I know are fully chargeable, and a charger that is in spec, before I try to trouble shoot the system. I also plan to buy a meter, so I can check the batteries.

I noticed that the charger cable plugs into some very small contacts in the battery (not the camera contacts). However, there is no way to reach those, and clean them.

Please keep posting experience to this thread, as it seems that a number of us who use the DMR (a dwindling group no doubt) are having similar problems as our DMR systems age.
