Leica M3, Hip Shots

Very nice quality and tones (what film and paper/scan?)

I like the first one of course because it looks well prepared. The expression of the man and the background. The Baghdad Café is great. Looks like a cine shot.

(Also just nitoced the billboard and hands expression but that doesn't do it for me. I like the simple expression of him without the connection. It's a great shot without).

Rich - The first picture is perfect with the subjects hands in almost the exact position as the hands in the billboard. From his expression It almost seems as if he just saw the billboard, turned around and is questioning himself.

The other two have very unique lighting and expressions.

That first one is a beauty. Shot from the hip so composition is outstanding. The position of the hands, opposing direction of the faces, topicality of the cafe's name, colour of the man's clothes and the cars, and the challenge of the sign. The possibility that the man has just picked up the camera with his eye. An excellent photo in all respects. Was this really a snap shot is all I'm asking myself - it's almost too good to believe. :-)

Rich, these are great shots. #1 and #3 are my favorites, with #1 being a true classic! If they are indeed hip shots, I admire your ability of such precise framing from your hip, but even if they aren't, they are still great. Thanks for sharing.

P.S.: I just noted in your blog that you are looking for 19mm screw in filters for your Elmar 3.5/50 lens. I recently bought two of those 19mm filters brand new (I also own and use an Elmar 3.5/50 lens from the Fifties) from B+W, the German filter company, in MRC version even. B+W still makes these filters on request, so if you need one, just ask them.

BTW, some terrific shots in your gallery, kudos!

That is surprising! It looks great and I would have thought it was prints you had scanned.

Does it look equally good in large size/print from the scan?

Don't know yet..not sure I like them enough to go and print them. We'll see :)

Hip shots???

Dave

Hip shots as in shot from the hip without looking through the viewfinder.

I normally meter and and adjust the settings on the camera (I personally think a shutter speed of 1/500 is needed in order to not get too much blur considering that often both you and your subject is walking). The 'ideal' setting for me is about f/5.6 and 1/500.

I then prefocus on 1.5-2 meters and snap away as I walk. It's a great way to burn the remainder of a roll if you have 3-4 frames left and is on your way home or to the lab :)
