jamesmd Posted January 3, 2009 Share #1  Posted January 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) All the discussions about M8 against others I think really is nothing to do with quality that in M8 and Leicas glass is obvious for everyone I think . Its simply they way each one likes to take their pics , you can get great pic with any camera I would say . How many wonderful pics are out there taken with even Phones ! But if you are comfortable with your camera its most probable you get better results . And I think the kind of persons ( I include my self ) that chose an M8 don't feel as comfortable with other kind of cameras, I hate menus , or buttons for speed and aperture . I might be mistaken , but I think not many M8's have thought of changing to an S . ( without considering the cost ) I personally don't feel attracted by S , I like to know what it does and how , and I'm curious for technology but its not the camera I would like .  would you change to an S if you could ?  cheers  James
Advertisement Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Hi jamesmd, Take a look here M8 versus others. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 3, 2009 Share #2 Â Posted January 3, 2009 James, Â I could and I'm pretty sure I would not. I have been shooting DSLR's since 1997 nothing new here... whats new is shooting my M8 and the process of shooting it brings. I'm shooting the M for the overall experience, not trying to beat the technical quality of a D3 or some other SLR. Â Thats not saying the S is not a great camera, just that I do not see it being a natural progression of the M which is naturally why I'm reading this particular sub-forum. Â Now it might well beat and better my DLSR kit, and that for commercial uses might eventually be a reason to look at the S, but it is not likely to evict the M (film or digital) from my backpack. Its the hole process what makes it different and real fun ( of course I understand others have fun in the other way )  cheers  James

Shootist Posted January 3, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted January 3, 2009 The only thing, for me, the M8 can be compared to is a film M and the next generation of digital M (whenever that may come around), again I say FOR ME. Â I got my first M camera back in 1972 and once I did I sold all the SLR gear I had. I had it for 3 years and then sold it to move to a 2 1/4 SQ format camera. I took less pictures with the larger format camera and was sorry I sold my M. 2 years after getting the LF camera my house was robbed and all my camera gear was stollen, along with everything else of value. I drop out of taking picture for quite some time until the mid 90's at which point I bought a SLR film camera. Never liked it and always yearned for another M. When I got into digital it was with a P&S Canon and then a Nikon D200 but when looking for a better digital camera then the P&S I first looked for a Leica. At that time they didn't have the M digital but I did buy a film M or 2. When the M8 was announced I said YES FINALLY. I bought my fist M8 in January 2007 and haven't looked back. I just like shooting with a RF and a Leica. Never even thought about a Leica SLR, although I did own a R4s for a short period of time. I have no interest in any of the SLR type cameras on the market now or that will come in the future. They are just not for me. Â Now if the MFT type of cameras had a bigger sensor, and they might in the future, then I might look into them.
kameraguy Posted January 3, 2009 Share #6 Â Posted January 3, 2009 I certainly would love to have an S. If the sheer quality promised and the ability to flash sync at all CS speeds is realized....in the form factor we see so far...wow, what a camera it will be. A different animal than the M8, but equally as beautiful in my eyes anyway. Â Only reason I will not get an S as well? I'm afraid my bank account can only dream to afford such a system
luigi bertolotti Posted January 3, 2009 Share #7 Â Posted January 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'd like to TRY a Leica S2... format is exciting and lenses too, but, apart the obvious financial issue, I'm not sure I'd like to HAVE one... working with a M body is a thing I like and I am accustomed to: the reason for, at the moment, I am not tempted by any DSLR (the same as i wasn't by SLRs)
kameraguy Posted January 3, 2009 Share #8 Â Posted January 3, 2009 I would not hesitate to use the M8 along-side an S2. Both are so different in what they offer, but it is a nice complement. Â I would use the M8 for situations where I want to be discreet, and the S2 for studio work and any time where ultimate resolving power is desired. But there are no rules to say you can't use either for anything you want...it's nice the S2 is made to be as familar as any DSLR.
Guest Posted January 3, 2009 Share #9 Â Posted January 3, 2009 A small R&D team as Leica's can only spend n man-hours . The S2 delaying the M9 can't be a thing I like
HaraldL Posted January 3, 2009 Share #10 Â Posted January 3, 2009 Yesterday I bought the 75 mm summicron. Was thinking of the 85 sonnar on a D700. Well I only had to have that in my hands for a few seconds before the thought left my mind. Handling a dslr is very different from the m's. And as quality is concerned, you need real big printing to discover noteworthy differences. Still the S2 will be stunning. Pity they're not using that latest Dalsa sensor, maybe there's an option to subscribe to the upgrade already with your pre-order... I use DSLRs when needed but only when needed. I think the best work I've done so far in my life has been done with my M8s. Not necessarily best with respect to technical quality but best with respect to the pictures themselves. Much of that has to do with the ways the M8 allows me to see and work. Technical file quality, lens quality, etc. are (as you suggest) just one small piece of the overall picture.  Cheers,  Sean
Fotomiguel Posted January 4, 2009 Share #12 Â Posted January 4, 2009 Happy to read nice things about the M8, my friends. Â The more I learn how to use my m8, harder is to work with my Dlsr. That's because I like to work manual. I like to control by myself the focus, light and the composition, through my eyes. I enjoy shooting overalls and the small leica m8 plus lenses give to that moment a kind of softness and fineness. I enjoy much more shooting. That's the important. I have the sensation that there is still a long way with my M8. Still a lot to learn and possibilities to improve my photography through better skills. Of course the M8 can be improved, but in my opinion, making it more similar to the M7. Cheers
