Well if they're first saying it's a limited edition of 500 and all of the sudden changes to 10 000 I for sure think it's false marketing..

I don't think Leica ever said anything about 500. Maybe this number was mentioned as a rumor on some third-party websites, but you can't blame Leica for that.

Now that I think of it, the first time I saw the number 10,000 mentioned there I thought it was a typo. Not only would this make the camera a non-rarity, I also doubt that Leica would ever be able to sell 10,000 of these.

FWIW, I just checked and the very reputable German Leica dealer Martin Meister wrote in his most recent newsletter that there'll be 1,000 D-Lux 4 Titanium cameras. Now, that seems more likely, but of course it's not an official statement from Leica.

i guess there'll be 1000 units available in Germany, maybe..

The exact quote from Meister's email is: "Die Produktion ist auf 1.000 Stück limitiert." Translated, that would be something like (I think) "The production is limited to 1,000 units." So, he talks about the number of cameras that'll be built, not the number of cameras that'll be available in Germany. (Besides, I wouldn't expect Leica to not sell one to the 1,001th German would-be buyer in case they have leftover stock from, say, Japan.)

But, as I said, this is just guesswork and not an official word from Leica.

Maybe it's 1000 per country, for 10 countries? Who really know? I don't think it really matters. I wouldn't be buying it for it's limited-ness, but because I think it looks cool and I haven't bought a black one. (If I was going to buy a black one I'd get the LX3 anyway.)

As to the profiteering comment, that word has a bit of a negative connotation. Leica is simply offering a different version of a popular camera. Even at 10,000 there will probably be less of them than the black version so I don't see a problem with saying it's a limited edition. If you don't want one, don't get one. End of.

In reality, since it comes with a leather case, it is about the same price as the black one. Of course, the discount does not apply, but shouldn't it? I also have the $150 coupon from my M8 upgrade. Today, I do have a choice since mine has not come in yet. I shall keep the order in place.

Update: He sent out his January newsletter today and wrote that "1,000" was a mistake he made and that the actual number is indeed 10,000. I'm surprised...

I was flicking through the AP earlier at the station and saw a piece about the Titanium Dlux4 which said limited to 10,000 - and remembered this thread.

The good news is that if 10,000 is a 'limited edition' they must be selling many many more standard models, and we all like to see Leica selling well.

Maybe the other figures people have mentioned are the allocation for that particular market, as opposed to total production?

Hi. For those who were wondering about 500 vs. 10,000, what I remember seeing in the Robert White web site was very specifically 500 units _for the U.K._.

To the OP: Congrats on your purchase of a nice camera, and a BIG thank you for posting those unboxing pics! I am _always_ a big fan of camera porn. :p

the Titanium Limited Edition

but just the Titanium Edition.

Who cares, are we taking pictures or saving collectables?

I hate all these special editions.

The watch industry is doing the same.

My favorite brand released a Limited Edition of 1827 pieces,

they were sold out in no time.

Then the company changed the watch a tiny bit and released it again

unlimited.

I don't bother anymore with these so called LE and only go for it when I really

like it better, than the normal product.

Maybe Leica should start making "dummies" in a range if designs to serve the people who buy these sort of things, interchangeable dots, nicely designed set of stickers to create a variety of stealth effects etc. Fancy a top design camera that never breaks, you won't be able to make pictures, but this must be of minor worry... as long as the bags, coverings and most of the dots are available.

I can't see people buying these gadgets to be into photography all that much .... but then I'm probably wrong
