psquared Posted December 10, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) The moon happened to be rising as I took this picture. I used f/32 to get some shape to the moon, so the bird isn't as sharp as it ought to be. stuny Posted December 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 10, 2008 Peter - Kingfishers are notoriously skittish, so your effective focal length of something like 1500 was necessary. There is still more than adequate detail on that little beauty, and your idea of using the moon as you did is terrific. Excellent overall. Kingfishers also tend to return to their favorite roosting spots. Did you have to wait for his return, or did you catch him right off?

psquared Posted December 11, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted December 11, 2008 Thank you kindly, gentlemen. Stuart, Yes, you're right about them being very skittish. They usually perch on a small grove of (mostly dead) trees at the edge of a pond ... either there or on a tree in the center of the pond. A lot of times they announce their arrival with a loud call. For this particular shot, I was walking slowly in search of one when I heard the call and saw her land directly in front of me. I saw the moon as well, so I just moved a little bit to get the moon in the frame, and came up with this picture. Lucky! Peter

stuny Posted December 12, 2008 Share #13 Posted December 12, 2008 Peter - There is no doubt that luck plays a part in many of our photos, but you were there with the right equipment at the right time, saw the possibility for the composition, and shifted position to catch it. And you were quick enough, too.
