For those that speak German (or are prepared to wade through Babelfish prose) here is an interesting link to an article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Die Leica machte Fotografen wie Korda und Cartier-Bresson zu Stars und versank dann in der digitalen Moderne. Jetzt soll sie wieder auferstehen - ein Besuch - Das Auge der Welt - Nachrichten - sueddeutsche.de

I am not saying leica will throw in the towel, all I'm saying that it will not be easy given the current situation. There are and have been more "economically powerfull" companies going/gone to ground than Leica.

Indeed, unless you're an insolvency practitioner then its not easy for pretty much any business in the current situation, but it seems that Leica have a game plan, and the necessary financial backing to support it.

James, let's hope so.

There are two indicative factors in the Leica results one should take into account:

1. P&L

this isn't the most important factor depending on where the L(oss) comes from, if this is R&D for a larger part, then "the Game Plan" will work for the current loss forms the seeds for future profits .... (well partly at least)

2. Decline in Turnover

If the negative P&L is caused by a huge decline in "turnover" then you can have all the Game Plan you want but this will not be quite as effective, the Game Plan in this situation might be called "total restructure".

Negative results defined by serious decline in turnover are very problematic and hard to solve especially in a weaker economical environment like a recession.

Leica results derive largely from a decline in turnover .... this is problematic, it implies there is something structurally wrong with the company, either external or internal and most probably a combination of both, and such is currently the case with Leica.

Isabelle,

From a theorical point of view, you are probably right.

But don't forget the real situation of LCA: in the first half of the year, Leica had no "state of the art" compact camera to sell. Now, the DLUX4 has been put on the market. And compact cameras are very important to the turnover.
