And why should "full frame" still refer to Oskar Barnack´s whim back in 1914? It might just as well mean 4x5" or 8x11 mm (Minox full frame). All of which shows how meaningless the whole concept is when applied to digital sensors.

Every camera is a "full frame" camera, in that it gives you the maximum image size it was built for....:p

Per,

I don't know why, but full frame refers to a 24 x 36 mm sensor; convenience perhaps?

I realise that you are poking fun so permit me to poke some back. :D By your definition of "it gives you the maximum image size it was built for" no digital camera will be a full frame camera because of the sensor's edge pixels that are excluded from the picture.

Pete.

Of course I´m poking fun...:D

For the "first generations" of dSLR´s (and the M8), it did make some sense to refer to 24x36, since both the components in the camera body and the lenses available were leftovers from film based models. But now most manufacturers have no film models to take care of, and new lenses for digital sensors are beginning to replace the old ones....

And, (to keep on poking...), no film camera was full frame either, since there were always film edges (even perforation) outside the picture frame....

Finally (my first really serious word in this post...), I do own a Digilux 2, and I just don´t think of what kind of "frame" it gives me; it´s just good enough... My D-lux 3, however, feels "cramped" in comparison.

Ben,

Full frame? If only! The D2's sensor is 2/3" or were you referring to something else ... ?

Pete.

Pete, what I see in my viewfinder is what I get in the file I process with both my D2 & D3. I doubt that anyone with an M8 gets what they see in their view finder & I have built-in smaller frame lines in my R8/DMR. Because I use my DMR so much and I can"SEE" what the whole frame looks like because the glass shows me, I consider the D2 & D3 as the only digital FF Leica's.

I agree with you in principle, but detest the stupid compromises that Leica has made that will not allow us to use the R & M lenses as designed, which are the real heart & soul of what Leica has to offer. This must be remedied. I don't want to look at my wife & kids, nor the world around me with cropped sight. That is what they have done. Build a better camera, not one that celebrates a storied past form. They need to get over this & get real.

Again Thanks for all the encouragements and help.

Here are my first efforts, hope i worked out how to upload.

Guess still a long learning curve to go.

Ralf, you have produced some nice clear pictures which illustrate the D2's great potential.
