usually when i upgrade firmeware I get something that opens and gives me 2 icons as shown on Leica. Now I get this:

I do not want to mess up my card or camera.

Caryl

The real file name is M8-2_002.upd

Rename that file by removing the first or second . (DOT) and the 1 so the file has a name of M8-2_002.upd

I use a Mac and for some reason i cannot open the update file. I have tried everything from stuffit to downloading a PC program to open with crossover but it still will not open right. Any suggestions

Caryl--

The only thing I can suggest is that you download the instructions along with the update.

For me, the update worked just as previously.

You don't need Stuffit or anything else, just double-click the download file.

(The reason for the .1 in your filename is that you've already got a file of the same name on the drive.)

Just delete all the expanded files and start from scratch, and everything should work fine. Good luck!

Version 2.02 has updated correctly but at the cost of 1 sd card. After the upgrade the numbers had yet again reset to L1000001 so went through the routine of resetting the counter.

Somehow during this process the sd card (sandisk extreme 3) was irretrievably corrupted. New card works fine. Now of course it may all be a co-incidence to have a card failure at time of firmware update but does it seem likely?

What frustrates me more than anything is that the camera is just back from Solms for an upgrade. They returned the camera last Friday with the counter set to L9990001 and they must have known of the imminent FW update so why in heavens name did they not update the firmware last week when they had the camera.........................

Sorry for the rant but perhaps their service department will read this and someone will insist on better and more customer friendly quality control.

Exactly what happened with my M8, coming back from Solms with the counter set to L9990001 - plus a date in February 2008  - and after the upgrade to 2.002 the numbers had yet again been reset to L1000001:

Sloppy and Uncool! :o

Not sloppy or un-Cool

The Version 2 firmwares change a lot in the camera, that is why you can't revert back to the 1 versions.

While it is changing everything it has to RESET the camera back to factory specs wiping out all user settings and all other settings.

Simply it will do this every time you update the firmware so be ready to setup the camera as you like it every time you do a FW update and reset the picture numbering.

I can accept the RESET to L1000001 by 2.002, but a file number of L9990001 with a Solms in house update to 2.0, plus a funny date?

Not sloppy?

Simple fix to having the numbers reset when you do a firmware upgrade.

Take a card and take a shot. Take that card out and use another card to do the FW update. After the FW update is done and you have turned the camera off take the card out you use to do the update and insert the one you just took one image with. Turn the camera on and VIEW/PLAY that one image on the cameras LCD screen. Hit the info button to view the number on that image. Take one more shot, hit the play then the info button to view the number of the new image you just took (it shouyld be the next number after the one that was on the card), format the card in the camera. Your numbering well continue from that number on.

This can happen anytime. Say I had a card I hadn't used in several months and it had images left on it and the last image was numbered L1004678 and the camera was now recording images in the L1008xxx range. If I stuck that card in the camera and VIEWED the images on that card the camera would remember the last image number taken on that card and start numbering images from that last image number.

That is why it is so important to FORMAT cards as soon as you put them in the camera.

It has been said many time. There are more counterfeit SanDisk cards then there is tea in china. More then likely the card that got corrupted was counterfeit and was about to die anyway.

Excellent information! I just updated two camera's successfully. Your system of making the number sequence continue worked like a gem.

I noticed a curious thing. After I upgraded one camera, I put the card in the other one, but it didn't work. When I checked the card, I noticed that the update file had gone and I had to put it on again! Sort of 'ate it up' in the process...

Thank you,

Frans

During the FW updating process the card gets formatted wiping everything out.

That is why I say to have another card with at least one image on it to reset the numbering.

This has been the same for all FW updates that I can remember, for the M8.

Some have Locked the card before doing the update and that worked some times. For me it never worked and instead of the FW update screen coming up on the camera it came up with the Card Locked screen.

I have that one too. I downloaded it a few times different ways but always get the same image which is not the right one. I am going to try downloading it on a PC and see if that helps.

Caryl,

The Mac automatically unstuffs the file, so just drag the firmware file icon (which looks like a blank, generic file) to the card/drive icon and you're set.
